Can anyone recommend a decent Sat Nav system I can use in the car?
I'm looking for something relatively cheap, for use in the U.K. only, and easily transferrable between cars.

As much as I dont like to say it, tomtom is probably the best bet.
With the old tomtom one, I went through several of them, do to dodgy software and dodgy batteries but now that they have made several newer versions, I think this is not sorted.
The new unit with map sharing sounds quite good.

Wor Lass bought a Navman F20.
It lasted less than 2 weeks.
Came up with error message "Return to your dealer". So she did, and got her money back. Never bothered getting another - being wrinklies, we find old technology's still the best. She reads the maps, I drive. Sorted.

FIVE times?? sounds bad. Most folk have said the TomTom is one of the best units available? What has gone wrong with yours?delboye30 wrote:I've had nothing but problems since I bought my TOMTOM one last year. I've sent it back for repair 5 times!!!![]()

To tell you the truth fella, i'm putting it down to bad luck. Everytime they fix it and send it bk to me, it works for a day or so but then switches off. They recommend resetting it, which I've done but it still doesn't switch on. Their customer service is shite. One time when I sent it bk to them(due to it being faulty) I left the memory card inside the unit, when they sent it bk to me there was no memory card, and they told me I had to buy a new 1 from them.

I got a TomTom one XL from Amazon (cheapest I could find back in July). Its been absolutely perfect. I bought it for the GF because she gets carsick if she looks at maps on the move, so I was ending up driving the first half of a long trip and navigating the rest!
Anyway, its fast, easy to use and the widescreen might not seem that much bigger from the specs but it really works in the flesh. Get the best hardware you can then upgrade the software later on. I got free speedcameras with mine and that has already paid for the whole unit. Then I got the traffic updates thing and that is seriously impressive. All you need is a bluetooth phone and it reroutes you round the jams

Why spend extra money on a high spec one when the cheapest one can be updated to a high spec one cheap
Mine goes everywhere with me as i travel quite a bit , Saved my arse quite a few times

so taking weekends into account thats almost 1800hrs use and it hasn't gone wrong once yet
think i'll be burried before this bloody thing.
ps steve, got that update of UK map yet

OK, got fed up waiting for a "bargain" on Egay so went out and bought a TOMTOM One from Comet at a not too bad price. Seems to work alright - anyone got any tips / advice on getting the best from it?

turn the sounds off straight away and use the top down view. works more like a map that way and i personally find it much easier to orientate myself.
oh yeah dont follow it blindly, common sense is a useful backup, tried to send me off a bloody cliff, i sh*t you not

Problem with ebay people dont reseach what the store prices are and with the postage they make to much .

3D view and Sounds on for me
Each to their own I guess.
Its fun to follow it on some known journeys and see what it comes up with. Also overshoot a few turnings and let it work out a new route. They are very rarely wrong. Then get the speed camera and traffic update modules - they're really good.

dont get me wrong its almost always right and has helped bail me out far more times than it its cocked up, but down in the deepest darkest roads of cornwall it can get a little confused.
