The bad points:
It has small patches of rust here and there, nothing major, that was all sorted by one of the previous owners, along with a major respray.
The shell has done 177k and the front and rear aprons haven't been resprayed, the front apron and splitter are chipped to fuck, the rear is showing signs of light rust by arches. Nothing to get MOT advisory for a few years to come though, all just surface rust, some a bit worse on sills.

Major oil leak from cam covers, has been like this for ages, last owner did no maintenance other than oil changes. There is oil in spark plug holes, all over plugs and leads and all down side of engine. Easy cheap fix.

Exhaust rattles when mincing it about, the 2nd silencer looks a bit battered, hopefully the cat is ok, not that it needs one.

Idle is a bit rough sometimes, better than most vts's though, revs drop when returning to idle.

Front control arm bushes need doing again by the looks of it.
Front and rear anti roll bar link bushes & locating bushes need replacing.

Rubber fuel hose between filler and tank needs replacing, leaks a bit when filled to over 1/2 a tank.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Project progress so far:

Got some new spark plugs - bmw service intervals were 100k, 4 electrode plugs from factory. The factory ones were still fitted, was quite hard getting them out, the centre electrodes were pretty worn, nothing else wrong apart from the plug holes being full of oil. Once the leak and plugs are sorted idle problem should go.

I have ordered a new gasket set for the one piece head cover, thats an outer seal and one for each spark plug hole.

I removed the ring sticker from the boot, and the nurburgring writing from the bonnet, not sure if i will remove the outline there, i like it.

Cleaned the engine bay.

Exhaust leak is between cat and centre section, going to order a new gasket or whatever they use to seal it, might get a new centre section while i'm at it. The whole system head back is mandrel bent tubular, no cast manifolds, twin downpipes to cat.

Rubber bushes for the anti roll bar link rods have seen much better days, you can get ones off a 5 series that have balljoints at both ends then make some new brackets for them, that is on my list.
Front ARB is rusty as fuck, needs replacing really, or at least sire brushing and painting again. Might just buy the H&R arb kit Very Happy

Stripped the stereo, speakers and wiring out. Loads of dynamat was there, so i removed as much as possible, will remove more soon when i find the heat gun and scraper. There was shitloads of wiring.
The rear shelf had been cut to have rear speakers, i have binned them so taken shelf out for now, prob going to recarpet it in black rather than light grey. I did have the rear seats out and damn they are heavy, but a 4 door with no rear seats is gay.

Also took all of the sound deadening and carpet out of the boot, as well as the very heavy spare, it weighs far more than a saxo one. Cleared out the glovebox, toolkits, jack etc.

Got the front kidneys off for spraying black, they have had 4 coats now, starting to look very good, i forgot how good spraying can turn out if you are patient and use the right sort of wet and dry, wet between coats. Lacquer up next.

I removed the gash air fresheners and put a nice vanillaroma magic tree in there Very Happy

Purchased the trusty haynes, which is far better than the saxo one being more comprehensive and in more detail.

Polished the tailpipe back to it's proper stainless glory, hadn't been polished ever before it seems.

Inspected all areas for rust, a few were found, the most serious under drivers side mudflap, took that off, took it back to metal, painted with hammerite, refitted mudflap.

Cleaned the bbs's properly last night, which was not easy, last person who washed them made a halfarsed effort and didn't do between the spokes at all well.

Checked brakes all round, new calipers still look new, bled system with 5.1, it needs doing again though i think, doesn't feel right.

some cunt overfilled the oil by a fair bit, not a problem as the sump is some crazy design with loads of space before the crank would hit the oil. Going to drain it down to the correct level, oil is still nice and gold so not changing.

Checked tonnes of other stuff. Plenty of areas to give attention, not much urgent though. Need to find the fuel leak still, not put enough in there for it to leak yet, gonna patch it with chemical metal if its the tank, or get a new hose and clips if its the filler/breather hose, will sort the tank out over the winter before the next trip to the ring.

Think that'll do as a project update for now. Pics in a bit.

*note lack of mudflap and black hammerite, it is reflapped now :D

Poor phone cam pics alert, my digi cam is dead so i need a new camera now too :|

Lobbed all of this lot out:

Then binned spare wheel and a shitloads more sound deadening and carpet, and shelf etc.

grille after one coat, now looking thoroughly black, might have them back on during the week, lacquer takes so fucking long to cure properly.

Image

Saxo looks fucking poofy next to it :|

just had the whole cat back system off, what a mission Neutral

whoever had fitted it had used no exhaust paste and it was therefore blowing at both joins. and the 2nd silenver has got battered wherever it was stored. the whole std system is stainless though which is a bonus.
took all of the joins back to bare metal and pasted them then ran it for a while, sounds far far better, not leaking at all but the centre box rattles a bit, either gonna replace that or more likely just buy a cat back system, hopefully one will come up second hand. if only the cat wasn't part of the downpipe which is complicated and a mission to remove and refit every year, i'd get a decat, if i could find a company that makes one Neutral

Pretty sure this is Demlot's (andrew) old car, if i'm not mistaken...you must have bought this off a chap by the name of Jav, who bought it off Andy.

Kinda surprised to see it sold already, by Jav (Zone name eternalife)

Sweet looking iS all the same, with some really good bit's on it.

All the best with the project 8)

Yeah i bought it from Jav(eternalife), demlotcrew is the name that was mentioned.

Good to see a lot of it had been undersealed, and a lot of the common problems have been tackled. Looks like the one common problems hasn't though, the fuel tank :|

I'm liking the look of your red E30 :D

Trying not to spend too much on this car, i know i will end up doing it though.

Current priorities are sorting out the fuel tank, getting the suspension sorted, then respraying the front valance and splitter.
Edit: need to respray one of the skirts too as that is screwed. And respray both sills after attacking zee rust :|

It looks a nice motor that mate

Just a couple of points you might like to know :-

The CAT..... junk it  Heres what the mot testers manual says ''1. The exhaust emission test

The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most class IV spark ignition petrol engined passenger cars with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992.''

you dont need it anymore than i needed the cat on my old corsa diesel.

2nd those plugs are certainly well used but the center electrode is about level with the ceramic straight out of the box (fitted some on a RangeRover sport the other week... that was fun, a version of the M60 i beleeve)
I would guess they were fitted when the timeing chain was done.

Weird that the centre electrode is that low, i did wonder because they didn't look worn as such. Oh well, it runs much better now :D The receipt for those plugs is for when the M40 was still in it, back in 2003 by the looks of it :|

I can't seem to find anywhere that sells decats for these if anyone knows that would be awesome :D

Bought some H&R ARBs earlier, pics added to first post.

Good car that, but i doubt very much it has a CAT fitted to it, is there a lambda sensor on the down pipe? connects up under the battery tray. If there is a blanked off connector under the battery tray, then it don't have a CAT.

i'm sure it has a cat, as far as i can see 99% of 318iSs had cats, and the diagram of exhaust systems on bmw parts comp shows a cat which looks identical to my system. might be wrong though lol

Well i took it for a track day, and err stacked it haha. Nah it's fine, just needs the front panel and splitter sorting out. It was inevitable. I learnt that not having an lsd means you really can't put down much power in corners without pirouetting down the track at a fair pace.
I now need new wheel bearings all round, definitely need a diff, definitely need some wider stickyer tyres, and some better suspension!

i wasn't hanging about...

won a cup for the best comedy error of the track day :D pictured with the visible carnage.

Tidy car you've got there, Demlot carried out most the work so should be spot on.

Very much doubt it has a CAT, neither of mine has had one.

actually lsd will make that worse.. with an open diff it is more likely to just spin up the inside wheel

Modified driving style needed compared to a Saxo..

Tis a nice motor tho
