Right, I know that BMW used the 4-cylinder engine to reduce the weight over the front wheels of the M3, but what about the rest of the E30 range?

Does anyone know where I can find a list of engine weights (mass in KG's), for the various 6-cylinder engines that can be fitted into the E30? I've seen people using the 3.6L unit from the E34 M5, but isn't that a bit much? I'm guessing that the 3.2L engine from the E36 M3 Evo might be a bit lighter, or am I wrong?

Has anyone here had experience of driving E30 with different engines? Say, the 318is Vs. the 325i? Or maybe the M3? Does the physically bigger engine make a bid difference to the handling?

Thanks. :)

That is not the reason for the S14 beeing 4cyl.

If you intend on not tracking your car in a all open track series
get the biggest engine you can get in there.
The diffrence can be fixed with suspension changes.
With great challenges comes great engineering.

one of the parts list stickys in the tech section lists all the weights beside all the parts available.
i swapped my 2.5 6 pot for a little 2.0 4 pot and i cant really say it effected the handling to a noticable extent and it only knocked the weight balance out 2% to 52/48% over the wheels.

Thanks, I meant it as being one of the benefits, but being sleepy on a Sunday evening doesn't help to my point across.

Thanks very much. The buying guide there was good too.

Spot on winkeye

Until recently all the track days i have done were in a 325i, the last of the year we took a 318is instead and i was surprised how much you could feel the difference between 4 and 6 cylinder. That being said if its a road car your doing stick the most powerful lump you can afford in :D
