Can anyone advise me on what is better...a K+N Panel filter or cone filter for my 325i?

Most will tell you to stick with the original airbox and replace the panel filter. Cone filters are ok, but need a heat shield to cover them, the cold air feed pipe supplied with most cone filter kits just wont cut it.
If your after induction noise, you can always drill the bottom of the airbox. The cone filters Ive heard on 4cyl cars (205gti, astra gsi) have been all rasp and no roar

Thanks for that. I will go for the panel filter then. Just out of curiosity...would i have to get a makeshift heat shield or can i obtain them from somewhere?

It would have to be a custom heatshield. I dont think anyone sells them, but I could be wrong.
BMC do their Carbon Dynamic Airbox, its a bit pricey but its meant to to be good. Check out the group buy section.

i have also heard that the bmw airbox is pretty good,
it does cost a bit as mentioned by jmc330i, i opted for
the K&N panel filter, it works pretty well and there is more
noise from the induction now
