I get the feeling that the 1 series hatch has flopped, so it's being redesigned as a saloon, a bit like the good ol' e30..... The 'vert adds weight to my theroy?

Looks better than the 3-series E92 - or E91, can never remember which is which.

The thing is, like most manufacturers, cars grow with each evolution. It gets to the point where the small car is not so small anymore. Take VW. The small cars were the Polo then the Golf. Both have grown. I reckon the latest incarnation of the Polo is possibly as big as or bigger than, the mk1 Golf. Hence them introducing a new model. The Fox.

This one series looks to be a similar size to the e30 three series. Ok it's lots heavier but then that's compensated by the larger power plants. I hope the one series coupe is pitched as a drivers car. It's a real opportunity to produce a low tech fun car. Though I doubt that will be the case.

I love how it looks too

I really like the 3 / 5 door 1 series. What ever you think about Bangle all modern BMWs are well proprtioned with a very dynamic stance. I think the saloon is ugly and the convertable worse. They look "wrong" in the same way as the Focus or Megan saloons do: they are a hatch with a boot tacked on. I'd guess BMW had an eye on the USA where hatches sell miserably. Go to the US and you'll see quite a lot of Jettas / Boras but very few Golfs (which they call Rabbits Iirc). Same for Focuses and Civics.

Most of the Bangle stuff (E60, E65, Z4, 6 series) I like, really refreshing design rather than the 80's BMW way of the same car in 3 different sizes. But the 1 is pig ugly beyond belief.
