Help, I started to undo the dash to try to fix the problem and smoke started coming from it!!!!
I have two dashes, put the other one in and that is doing the same, so my problem wasn't the dash, it must be the wiring. Effectively one of the tracks to the Rev counter / MPG is burning (it still works but I have now removed the dash, and am paranoid about finding a burnt out wreck).
Any ideas?

sounds like you may have a split wire or something grounding out, best bet is to have a good look around then get the multi-meter out!

I assuned something was grounding out, strange it does it with the ignition off.
More trouble on the way home, Drove without the dash in place, it is only 10 miles from work to home. Radio switched off while driving on minor road. Turned onto motorway and radio came on. Also the wipers went slow.
Got home, missus went to work. Where her Mondeo had been was a pool of oil. Chased after her, got to Tescos and checked the car, the oil must have come from something else. ANyway got some bits, got back to car to find the sidelights on. Car would not turn over.
Lucky I carry a spare in the boot after it went flat a few weeks ago.
Unluckily I had used the spanners at the weekend and not put them back!
My dad turned up with some in the end.
Anyway, I now have an auto electrician coming tomorrow to try to work out what is wrong.

Sounds to me like whatever burned was an earth lead. this can lead (no pun) to all sorts of weirdness.

Cheers cuk, thats just what I needed..
Electrician has been, one of the Glovebox screws was through a cable. Seems OK now, I will be worried though.
He did assure me that the track would go before anything caught fire.

Go through all the fuses in the fusebox, and check they are all the rating they should be.
