Hi guys,
I'm re-shelling my 335 in a few days, and whilst the engine is out I thought I could do a few tweaks, one of them being an e28 flywheel to replaced the (dual mass?) e34 one.
My question is, will i need a whole new clutch kit, or just a different clutch disk? How much can I expect to pay for an e28 clutch?

i got a recon (ferodo iirc) one from APS in hastings for under £100. it's been ok so far and has had plenty for 3rd gear burnouts without cooking!
GSF are about £160 ish afaik.
now to prove i am a real anorak, here are some pics of a E28 clutch!!!

and my rusty E28 flywheel, before i cleaned it up:

dunno how they compare to a E34 one as my donor was an auto so i've not seen one!
oh, why the reshell? it's only a little bit tweaked on that corner

Nice post mate, thanks for that. £100 seems like a good price, i'm getting a bit of slippage when changing form 3rd-t4th (at 6k+ rpm) - so thought I may as well upgrade the flywheel if i'm changing the clutch. Shame as my clutch was brand new when i put the engine in, but got badly contaminated with gearbox oil in the incontinet gearbox fiasco.
The old car is worse than it looks, and id rather put the money it would cost patching up a turd towards a lovely new shell, which will mean the car actually has a resale value when it come to me serving it on. The new shell looks great, white, non sunroof and very clean. Picking it up next thursday

Blimey Theo!
Didn't realise your shell was that badly stuffed!
Good luck with new shell, as always, just give me a shout if you want an extra pair of hands!
Can't wait to see the new one!
Oh, and E28 M535i flywheel weighs around 10.5kg I think. The E34 dual mass is around 15kg I beleive.
As said you will need an E28 clutch.
Gareth's sounds a bargain, I paid around £170 for an LUK (but withs Sachs stamped on the components) from GSF.
It is a nice clutch to use and I've never had slip even with several hard launches.
Good luck mate!

Will be interesting to see what difference a lighter flywheel makes, it picks up quite nicely as it is.
Good of you to offer help mate, I may well give you a shout when I know when I'll be swapping engines. Engine and box will be going in as one btw
Ohh, I've still got that ECU of your's, fancy selling it by any chance?

Sorry for delay in replying Theo, I've not been getting reply notifications again!
Ecu is yours for £10!
Just call or pm me nearer the time of engine swap and I'll try and make time to lend a hand.
We should have this engine swap job down to about an hour and a half soon!

May well be interested in one of those E28 clutches...
Any issues with your auto lump (ECU etc) rather than a manual donor?
(Sorry for the minor off topicness!)

Cheers Martin, will gladly give you a tenner for the ECU.
I got the engine and box out today, tomorrow I'll remove and the rear end and put new subframe bushes in, and get the rest of the morsels off the car. Thursday i'm off to get the 316i donor, and will start the whole fecking process again on friday! Will give you a shout once I have a better idea of when the 3.5 will go in.

Only difference with the auto engine is the throttle position sensor, which can be changed for a manual one or made to work (sorry, I don't know how), but it is bigger and gets even closer to the bonnet.Ziggy wrote: Any issues with your auto lump (ECU etc) rather than a manual donor?

And don't forget the spigot bearing!
Shame you are so far away Ziggy, Theo, Gareth and I are getting the knack of dropping these engines in!
Theo, no worries, I've got a few things on at weekends coming up but I'll try and fit round when you want to get it done.
Sounds like you've been rather busy already, nice one!

the auto TPS works perfectly, it's just the size that's limiting as it's just that bit taller. (mainly the auto plug that's bigger)
to swap to a manual one, you'll just need the manual TPS and plug and soldering equipment etc. there are 3 wires (from memory) that are the same on both types, simply reconnect these and cut/insulate the others. the others run to the autobox so if you don't have one, you don't need them any more! it's all fairly self explainatory once the connectors are dismantled.

as has already been said (though it gets asked so much there's no harm repeating it!!)
Auto engine, loom, ecu, TPS and bloody well everything else is FINE! the whole lot! i put my automatic engine in in one go without disconnecting or even touching the loom, ecu etc, plugged in, started first time, end of story.
i never swapped the TPS for a manual one, it was probably close to the bonnet but never gave any issues through being so...
sorry about the off topic... i can add only that my e28 GSF clutch seems happy enough coping with a 50% power hike so they must be ok (though we'll see what it's really made of during the pod meet

Sorry for the lameness (& cheers for the aerial btw!) - Just seen a couple of people recently saying they needed a manual ECU rather than their auto one, or a manual loom for some reason... just thought I'd check!Toby_Unna wrote:as has already been said (though it gets asked so much there's no harm repeating it!!)

Aaargh - don't say that! Almost tempted to put the engine back in the pickup & bring the whole lot down to youDRIFTBOY wrote: Shame you are so far away Ziggy, Theo, Gareth and I are getting the knack of dropping these engines in!![]()

You'll be fine, I'm sure, Ziggy!
And you'll be all pleased with yourself!
It's useful to have an extra pair of hands getting the engine on the mounts while it's swinging around on the hoist!
Are you going for a E28 flywheel and clutch?

E28 fly & gearbox... Getting the clutch too, but I expect I'll stick a new one in unless it looks brand new!
E30Mark will be getting a shout when said second pair of hands is needed - he's got the added incentive of getting his crane back when it's done

& anyone - do clutch kits usually include the release bearing? Can't remember!

Yeah, nearly all clutch kits come with the release bearing.
While the gearbox is off it's also worth checking for signs of oil leaking from the gearbox input shaft. Not difficult or expensive to fix as far as I know.
Ditto the output shafty seal at the rear of the gearbox.

I did see your offer on the tank, sorry if I didn't respond - how rude!
If you were closer to me.
Although I might be down that way soon, with tools as well, when I go to my sister to remove her VW Camper engine.
Will hopefully be in the next couple of months some time, can't say when yet though.
I'm always happy to lend a hand!

it's been nearly 2 years since i got mine but i don't suppose that's had much of a bearing on the price.

ok, i popped into GSF and they can't get the cheapo clutches any more.
new clutches start at £141.86 + vat
recon clutch is £131.80 + vat. hardly worth it.
both unknown manufacturers too iirc.
glad i got mine while it was still available
