Hi
I have caused a new problem by mistake on my car. Car is 1987 E30 320i. On sunday while replacing my badly worn throttle cable I noticed that the Throttle Position Sensor was out of adjustment. I could bearly hear a faint click when the throttle was about half way through it's normal travel. I decided to clean it out and set it so that it was clicking just as the throttle came to the rest position which the Haynes manual says is perfect. Only problem now is that the idling has rose and stuck at about 1500RPM. I have tested the switch with a mutli meter and there is a closed circuit at the rest position. It does this irrespective of whether the engine is cold or hot. Could the mechanic that services my car every so often have some how adjusted all the cars settings for the incorrect position of the throttle switch and would the switch really throw the idling out that much? I mean with the new postion on the switch, the car has a lot more power when I put my foot down because the switch now makes contact when the throttle is fully open. This has made the car a lot more fun when I put my foot down. Only problem is the idling now.
Any ideas on how to sort out the problem? Before somebody suggests it, the new throttle cable is adjusted ok and does not bind on or hold the throttle. There is about 1.5mm play on it which seems to be ok. Would the best plan just be to dismantle all the throttle again and put it back where I think it was :(

Thanks

Welcome to the Zone, check this guide out. It's not quick to do but it isn't hard and will sort out your running troubles.

Hi Guys

Cool thanks for the article. I have downloaded and read it and will follow the procedures today when I get home. One question though, my car has LE - Jetronic Fuel Injection and not Motronic. Will this make a difference?

Thanks

Looks like Im a dork on 2 accounts. no link and the Ljet issue.

The basic principles behind the guide will apply, but the 2 systems are very differnt to each other.

I'm well versed with L jet, but not on E30's. I'm sure other people will give you some tips.

Yes, your mechanic (or somebody else) has probably adjusted the idle to compensate for the "broken" switch.

It's funny though, usually the idle rises to about 1500 rpm when you _disconnect_ the throttle switch.. just to doublecheck, give it a spin with the switch disconnected and check if this changes the idle (you might have adjusted it a bit too far closed, if you catch my drift).

Anyway, luckily, idle speed isn't hard to adjust on L-Jet at all, there should be an aluminium pipe thingy on top of your intake manifold, this is the idle air bypass valve. If you stick a flatbed screwdriver in there you should be able to adjust the idle back to around 750 rpm.

If you're unlucky, someone messed with the throttle stop aswell, there should only be the slightest gap (you'll be able to find the exact specs on the web) with the throttle closed.

Finally, it could be that the idle mixture is now a bit off (rich probably) so keep an eye (nose) on this and have emissions checked when in doubt.

Cheers Gents

Thanks for all the help, I have just finished yesterday all the procedures listed in Andy_magic's Motronic guide. The throttle was full of gunge but after plenty cleaning it is nice and shiny again. I have adjusted the idle bypass valve as rickk told me to and I have managed to get the idles to stay at a perfect 1000RPM when the engine is cold and about 750RPM when warm. I have also rechecked the Throttle Position Sensor and it is ok at idle (The circuit closes) but for some reason now it does not close the circuit when it approaches full throttle. I cannot get a reading no matter how far back I adjust the TPS. According to the motronic guide this means that the TPS is shot and needs to be replaced. Is their anyway I can somehow open the TPS and just check if it is loose contacts or that they just need cleaning? Or does this mean another trip to the BMW parts centre.

Once again thanks to all who helped get the idle sorted. I wish I had the knowledge a few months ago when I paid upwards of 40 pounds for my mechanic to adjust it incorrectly. Next time Iam in England I must look you guys up and buy you all a pint

Thanks
