Started off as a sort of worn gearbox bearing noise at idle, something rattles occasionally when accelerating too, now it rattles loudly at idle as the car has a rough idle, which is something else to have a look at :|

Any ideas? the clutch works fine and the gearbox is on approx 100k apparently. It's a 318iS engine and box.

I doubt it's the gearbox, what clutch related usually makes these dodgy noises? How long does it usually last once it starts making noise too? I'm doing a track day tomorrow and off to the ring next weekend, luckily i have a few spare cars.

the getrag boxes are known to "chatter", something to do with the layshaft bearings I believe. The uneven idle will be making it seem worse.

If it is this, which it sounds like it is, the box will be fine

I'd put my money on it being the release bearing.
Even if it was its only a minor problem that can be done eventually when time permits
My track car is after devloping the same problem

*Edit*

Oops, I spoke too soon. should have waited for the page to load properly :o:

I didn't know the gearbox had rattle problems at all. Learn something new everyday 8)
