i was quoted by my local tyre fitters £72 all done for these tyres, yeah theo has these on his car, i believe he really rates them.

Used them at the 'Ring this year; yes, they are awesome.
Grip very well, slide progressively when pushed too far, can't fault them in the dry.
On damp roads (note : the 'Ring is bloody slippery in the damp!) they're still better than normal road rubber; it's only when there's a lot of surface water that they fail (aquaplaning down Belgian Autoroutes at c.100mph is not fun).

Pressures should be 30 psi hot (at least 50 C)

Oh, and they lasted about 120 'Ring laps plus over 2500 road miles

Being used a lot on hillclimb cars this season. Seems to have taken the place of the Yokohama range.

Control tyre in the production bmw series too! They are very good.

The PBMW control tyre is a 195/50/15 - apparently the slight undersize makes for a stiffer sidewall which more than makes up for losing 10mm of tread width.
They're also a lot cheaper.

We went 195, due to fouling issues with the 205 and LEDA/GAZ coilovers (if I recall, it was a long time ago we tested them )

What difference will the 195/50 make on the road or track? Obviously a smaller rolling radius so will speedo be out by a lot? Sorry I'm new to changing tyre widths etc.

Dam thats cheap but on the 195's it's going to be low. My car runs 205/50's and that low, low

Next trip to the ring for me has to be on these bad boys or something very similar

The order has been placed for 4 x 195/50/15 as advised

Next track day on the Isle of Man is 6th October so I'll let you know how I got on.

There are 20 Massaratis over for the track day in the morning and then a open track day in the afternoon so should be good

Superb - the best tyres I have ever used on the track in my E30 (I used TOYO T1-S before, and they just melted!


Even in the p1ssing rain at Brands the level of grip was astonishing. As already stated above - they don't like standing water and will aquaplane if driven in monsoon conditions (there has to be LOTS of standing water though, the odd puddle isn't a problem)

In the dry they are also unflappable. A few hard laps will see them start to melt but they are much more resilient than road tyres.

Highly, highly, highly recommended!

(To give you an idea of what my opinion is based upon, I have used Michelin Pilot Sport II, Goodyear F1, Bridgestone & Continental tyres on my E36 road car over the last few years)

Got them on late last night. Drove to work the log way (that's 17 miles on the ISle of Man) and the long way back home and off to the track tomorrow so they should be run in for 50 miles by the time I get to the track...Should that be OK???

Just come back from the track day with the new Toyo R888's on and yes they did perform well. I think the car front end needs some more camber though..

It was a seriously hot day up at Jurby on the Isle of Man and the Massaratis were out and sounding fantastic. The Lotus elan and elise club were over and ther were out having fun.

The tyres looked like this after running clockwise on the HOT and course runway track for 86 hot miles ..The car was weighing 1190kgs in total inc driver, passenger, cage and fuel so the inside front tyre got a hammering - see below...

4 degrees negative camber at the front is what the SELOC racers run.
Unless you have adjustable top mounts you almost certainly dont have that much
That's quite heavy wear you're showing there; airfield tracks tend to be very abrasive.

Here's what mine looked like after about a thousand road miles and a few 'Ring laps :

agreen - I've heard 6,000 miles quoted as an estimate of road life. Going by my experience of them, that's about right.
For summer use they'd be ace - I ran them for a week on the road before my 'Ring trip and had incredible fun, especially on roundabouts and lanes

This was easily the worst tyre of mine as it was taking the full load and hammering the others were similar to your picture. but I suppose that's old runways for you I ordered the med -Hard compound on the R888's... are they the same as yours?

4 deg neg camber sounds the way forward but don't have adjustable top mounts..what are the costs on those I wonder...? More £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£ required me thinks

You can get 4/5 degrees neg camber using the standard top mounts, save yourself the £200 quid and just mod the standard ones

All you need to do is chop of the inside side of the top mount (allowing you to move it right over) and weld some more metal on the other side (to allow you to fix the top mount to the body) set you camber then redril the top mounts, bang the studs back in and job done. Cost £14.50 if you go for some euro's new top mounts whilst your haveing them off.

If your not running coilovers you will be limited on the camber by the springs hitting the turrets, but you will still get some extra, you normally get around 2 degress neg just from lowering it 60mm

As said most of us in PBMW have around 4 degress, some 5 degrees

6k sounds fair, used to get aroun 9k road miles and a few trackdays on A048's on a S2 exige which is obviously lighter, and 48's (LTS) have a softer compound than 888's

I'm not running coilovers and it been lowered 40mm with the Bilstene shocks and springs kit so next option looks like coilovers with adjustable top mounts to get the camber sorted as this handling issue needs to be sorted...

Coliovers - Any recomendations of manufacturer / supplier for these and costs?

Coilovers, for the money i'd go GAZ they are excellent and around £700- you need to send your old struts in for them to rebuild and convert to coilovers. If you decide to go GAZ then ask for Dave and mention my name and you may get a better rate, he has sorted us a great deal for PBMW and loads of drivers are on them.

Your alternatives I gues are H&R and KW, no more LEDA unless they have resurfaced yet, but GAZ are just as good as LEDA and much better VFM

Re: Adjustable topmounts- are you ever going to adjust them or are you going to just stick 4.5 deg on and be done with it? I'd guess the later in which cash save the £200 and put it towards a trackday and use the method above

Before jumping into big bucks, its got to be worth having a bash to see how much camber you can get with your current set up, try the accident repair BMW topm mounts, they have camber built into them and the dealers use them on bent struts, them plus the method above may get you your 4 degrees and save you ALOT of dollar!!

Lloydie - no idea of the compound and I can't check as I killed them at the 'Ring early September! Camskill may know as that's where I bought them, but I didn't specify a compound.
Now running Kumho KH15s, not quite as sticky but less than half the price

agreen - You can get away with a fair amount of camber as long as your toe-in is zero. As little as 0.2 degrees of toe-in (or out) will scrub the insides from your tyres in a few hundred miles.
Find someone with a good alignment system, or go to your local BMW dealer - their KDS system is one of the best there is.
