I prefer the thing parked behind it in the second pic.

Nah it looks ok really...
But nothing special. It's probably more fun than a 335i though.

I've no idea what its like to drive (although I can guess... understeery until the traction control cuts in, massively over-servo'd brakes and a jiggly "Sport" ride) but it looks nowhere near as good as an E30. The new BMWs are real jelly-moulds where the E30 has excellent proportions and elegant lines. Especially the touring, but I'm biased ;)
Edit: What the hell is going on with those side skirts? It looks like two huge spare tyres on a fat slag's hipsters. Not nice.

Looks hideous with the added bonus of rear leg room for Douglas Bader. I'm not doubting it will be good to drive but who the hell would want that when you can have an E92 that looks a hell of a lot better, has a dashboard not made from recycled egg cartons and can fit people (with legs) in the rear? The 1 series has to be the ugliest thing on the road. Stupidly expensive and no better than a Golf.

i think that's a definate improvement looks-wise. the hatch is a truely nasty thing to look at.

I'd rather walk... In the rain, through the dodgiest part of Glasgow, at night, with bare feet, on broken glass.

I like it. This or an E30. This wins hands down.

I expect it would beat most 25 year old saloons hands down. But I'd rather have an E46 330ci, £20K in the bank and not drive a car with the aesthetic charm and appeal of horse droppings.

You think I could afford to run it on my wage?

I hate the 1-series hatch. IMHO, BMW lost the plot with that one.
This is something different though. I could almost like it.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

Very nice. Looks Great and the 135i (3.0ltr twin turbo) will be rapid. I wonder if Alpina will fettle this as they have all ready released a B3 bi turbo based on the 335i.

why didnt they just make a 335i?
The one series is basically a 3 series hatch, and they've taken the 3 series hatch and put a boot on it... isnt that just a 3 series????

Errrr, they did!
Your second comment is spot on. Its utterly pointless. A 3 series with lesser room and sh!t build quality.

I havent heard any build issues wrt the 1er. Okay they only seem to paint half the car but who cares what the engine bay looks like.

Have you ever sat in one? More rattles than a skeleton masturbating in a biscuit tin.

They've been squeak free when I've ridden in them.
Although to be fair they are really cramped inside.

They are by no means rattle free as the miles mount. The interior plastics and trim would be more at home in a Peugeot than an alleged "prestige" brand. The 1 Series continues the kind of cost cutting that began with the E36 compact.

Have to dissagree with you there, i have done extensive strip down and rebuilds off accident damaged 1's 3's and 5's and they are no means poor quality and deffinately miles ahead of any french tat. Being an ex body fitter in accient repair centre you kind of get quite intimate with all manner of manufacturers vehicles and its common knollege that german build quality is the best even if bmw and mercs have sliped a little.

i tell you what theres some serious tat being typed in this thread aswell!
Thats the bollocks and the first new bmw i'd like to own. It e30 sized but a bit heavier, but it's got 300 brake and alot more locked up. What a chariot! I've heard the 130i with minor mods can lap the ring as fast as a CSL.......
How the f**k can you moan about no rear leg room in a 1 series when you drive an E30? If you're 6 foot tall your head hits the bloody roof in the back of an E30
In relative terms an E30 cost far more than bmw's do now!

I like the new 1 series coupe, but i also like the 1 series hatch in 3 and 5 door.
The 135i will fly and theres supposed to be a 4 cylinder 2 litre twin turbo aswell.

Thats correct but its a diesel, i think the first one in the word to exceed the 100bhp per litre mark.

I prefer the hatch, it looks kind of quirky/Z3M coupe(ish), plus it will be more of a sleeper with a decent engine

Simon I'm with you on this one. Well its taken BMW nearly 20 years but they have finally made something close to an E30 replacement. BMW has finally gone back to their roots and made a proper "compact" sports saloon. I think its the first thing they have made in keeping with the 02/21/30 heritage.
However, I dont think its been done on purpose, almost like they stumbled back into it? I would be very interested to know if the design brief was to create something closer to the original small high performance car that changed the companies fortunes through the 60's 70's and 80's. Or did some one in a design studio in Munich go I know lets do something new
