Whats so special about the race engine that bmw used to make over 1400 bhp from 1.5 litres?

Hi,
One of the most fascinating facts about this engine, is that
BMW used to make sure the engine blocks had at least 60,000
miles on them !!!!
The Higher the mileage the better the HP Figures.
Also it was designed so that it could be run from 1.5 ltrs upto
2.0 ltrs, as a Turbo engine, with Formula 2 in mind.

I have a TBMW article on these beasts, i'll dig it out. They also used to take the old blocks and leave them out in the open to rust. Apparently it relieves stresses in the casts making it more suitable for boosting.

The engines were m12 not m10 (only the block is a M10 and that was modifed) and run a trick 4 vlave set up with solid timing gear lots of titinaum parts etc, currently they go for £25k for a rebuilt one 5-7k for a blown engine. They ranged fron 1.4 to 2.0l and the F1 and e21 IMSA engines were turbo, with most m12's being made for f2 single seaters.
In historic F2 they are the engine choice over the cosworth BDA/BDX etc
The big horse power ones were a 3 lap qualifing engine, and they ran a wierd mix of chemicals not your normal pump fuel, mainly to combat detonation. In race trim they made about 600hp.
In the USA 02/e21 forms there are quite a few turbo m10's making about 300hp, the 2.0l is the best as it came with a forged crank.

Think this might be a broken link..
The deck was also machined with chanels and vents behind the head gasket sealing rings so that the inevitable blowups didn't ruin the engines. Not really relevant to how it made the power but indicitive of the attention to detail required to get nearly 1000bhp/L to work 'reliably'.

Check out Clive massell's Alpina 2002Tii replica (you will just have to google the name and see what you come up with, based in south africa) I spoke to him about 2 months ago and with a 316 cam on the 12-1CR 2.0L motor with webers he is running 240BHP. The car sounds f%^*+ng awesome! I have it on dvd. Good site for info on M10 performance mods is Topend performance and Ireland engineering (USA). korman fast bmw (also USA) are also into the cars. Locally, Fritzbits do a lot of M10 work as do Jaymic, but nothing is cheap and the biggest issue is the exhaust manifold. Most of the race/performance parts are for earlier cars (2002Tii/E21) and LHD, as I have found out it's almost impossible to get a decent manifold that will bypass the steering rack on the M10 E30. Tii manifolds flow better than M10B18 ones, but you still have to modify the downpipe. I have bike carbs on my M10 and am selling my 1978 Alfa GTV to pay for a 10-1 CR 2002Tii block, head, header and dizzy to run my 292 cam with these carbs. Expect 150/160bhp. Unless I go the full rebore (2.1L) but much more money for not much gain. I hear there is a way of stroking these motors to 2.3L but can't remember where I saw it.

Oh yeah! If you have the base model (keep-fit windows and steering) weigh the car at your local council/scrappy to see what it comes out at. No loss to PS and low weight help, and these 316 1.8 cars were about the lightest of the E30's made, especially if you ditch the crappy Pierburg carb that weighs more than a Micra. Bike carbs weigh about three kilo's. cone filters/socks weigh squat.

s14 internals can be swapped into the M10

S14 internals cannot be swaped with out a bit machining, an s14 crank with m10/30rods & m30 3.5 pistons gives about 2.2l, with a 1mm of the block and a bti of work on the chambers for squish, boring a m10 to 94mm you are tight on space between the bores, you have to get luckly with a good block. then you need custom pistons.
The s14 crank needs a mod to take the crank damper, plus you want to do the usual m10 mod's to the oilways.

That means equal bore sizes should be able to be reached.
And same stroke,
They ran the S14 upto 2.9L but that does mean alterations to the block to allow the crank counterweights to move

It's a Janspeed F1 engine on display in the Nurburgring museum, though I think BMW made a few, too.

Yes the m10 & s14 share the same bore dimension but s14 blocks have a thicker casting, taking an m10 to 2.3 or 2.5 is possible but you have to torque up the block and Lester Owen reckons you get though about 5 blocks to get one right.
The currents s14 2.5 blocks from BMW now come with an extra thick casting around the top compared to the pervious one so they don't do that unless they have two.
The s14 block has a different casting around the journals to clear the crank webs, to get a 2.5 crank in a m10 you have to start modifying the m10 block to clear the rods.
