Now please dont take this as a bad post i am generally interested in what people think is soo good about them as soo many of you own them and myself not having had the pleasure of owning or driving one i dont know what they are like, i have a 325i and love my six pot having only had four pots before hand so come on people let me know i am liking the looks of these cars and my bro's looking at e30's since i got mine hahahahaha

Yep, they rev like hell and are a complete hoot to drive and handle great as stock. Great fun. They seem to be becoming more popular all the time.

bet your 6 pot runs out of revs before it runs out of gears dont know many other cars that would hit the rev limiter in 5th matey

Nice engine. Not the most powerful and certainly lacking in low down torque but loves to rev and if you keep it in the sweet spot it goes pretty well. Overtaking has to be done in an appropriate gear. You have to change gear alot in this car but its a decent shift mechanism.

Handling. In standard form i'd say its the best handling e30 bar the m3. (Not driven an m3 but i'm assuming) For road use the setup is ideal. Sharp turn in, great ride, good stability. For track use you really start to feel the body roll and they are too soft. Hence why I lowered mine. Although this causes other problem ground clearance being the major one. It also introduced some tramiling on motorways. But the car is so good now on country lanes that its worth having to crawl over speed bumps. At low(ish) speeds the car just grips and grips. No sign of understeer. On really fast corners you get a slight incling that the back end wants to slither out but it rarely does.

Insurance. Cheap as chips. Gets treated as a 318 by most companies.

Problems? Lack of steering feel. Common to all e30s and solveable with an e36 rack. Slightly iffy brakes as standard. Much better than other cars of its day though (ones i've driven anyway) and probably better than other e30s with its 4 disc setup. Decent pads improves things alot.

In summary i'd say its more of a drivers car than other e30s. You have to work it to extract its best but if you do it rewards. A few choice modifications (I'm not talkin chaving it up) and they really are cracking little cars. Just needs a bit more pace.

hahahahahaha now now ladies hand bags at dawn, i do like 4 pots but the noise of the 6 pot means i dont think i would buy a 4 pot again, that is unless the missus or my bro would want one which they do hehehehehe

You've a point about the noise. The six pot burble is lurvly. An unrattly m42 sounds ok at full chat though. Finding an unrattly one it the tricky bit.

6 pots don't sound as good as 4 pots!!!!

6 pots understeer more...

4 pots are lighter...

They rev easier...

Also comes with a good trim level, so sport seats, tech-1 wheel and gear knob, BBS were all standard and a lot have more too such as OBC, ABS etc.

There is no doubt that it is not a 325, it does lack grunt but they are a good car. As rodent pointed out, cheap to run, cheap to insure, great balance and handling is good and can be made better, decent spec and I managed to get from Somerset to The Hague in Holland (about 400 miles) on 1 tank of petrol I did 80-85 most of the way. It is a great start to owning an e30.

Don't get me wrong, my next one will be a 325 but I do love my iS to bits! Plus you should be able to pick up a good one between £1500-2000 and I know a few who have paid even less.

Production was only over 2 years though so not loads around....

Hello everyone- I am first day here and I am not sure if you are tolerant with opinion of ladies, but I have E30 318iS and am happy for that ;)
First of all- this car is light(comparing with 6 pot's), enough powerfull (140hp) and-the most important thing-very economic(in the city 10ltr/100km and on the road-6-7ltr(till 140km/h).
Of course there two disatvantages of it: teh sound of working engine is far away not so beautifull like 6pots and another is that... appetite comes with eating (I think it is even for 325i owners) ;)

(ps. I am only kidding. The IS is a great car with a great engine and as is a 325)

So you admit that you have to loose corner speed in an m20? Surely that defeats the object of proper driving! If you want to drive in a straight line buy a mustang.

Having driven many e30's from 316's to 335's i can agree that the 318iS is the better handling one in my opinion.
They are like a roller skate and are great fun regardless of their lack of real grunt.

Surely driving whatever car you have to its full extent is the object of proper driving.

a 325 with a lightened front end and good brakes would handle as well as/ better than a IS :D

the above post was a reply to this and 6 cylinder i would rather stick my finger in a meat slicing machine uprated this and uprated that and my 325 would be as good handelinf as a 318is why not just admit you incompitence and buy a 318is matey you LOSE

for the amount of money people are asking for a 2dr 325i in really good nick now i'd have to go for a 318is for sure, no ones pretending its a 325i sport beater but as a budget option it cant be beat, 40mpg i've had out of mine on a long run too.

uprating your 325i suspension to keep up with a standard 318is round the twistys kinda sums it up
