Guys,

While driving home yesterday from work, the engine started to leak water very badly :( the tempreture went all the way to the red and steam was billowing from under the bonnet. I parked the car up and let it cool down. I intially thought that the leak was coming from a rubber hose that had split. But upon inspection today, it's much worse than first thought!!

There is a small metal gromet type pipe that is part of the block (it sits at the back of the engine) on this gromet goes a rubber hose. Well the metal pipe has corroded completely, so in turn the rubber hose has nothing to go on to.

I'm totally gutted   as I now have no car...

I have another engine and box sitting at home, but have been lazy sorting it out  I've got no car for about 3-4 weeks now, I do have someone who is going to fit the new engine, for £180, but he's stacked to the ceiling, with work....

Has this happened to anyone else??

My mate has a e46 318i and the same thing happened to him. BMW told him, he would need a new engine, but he got it fixed, from his mates garage. I think they welded on a new pipe 8O

Sorry if I sound like i'm ranting Guys...Oh well the engine has done me proud, all 215K :)

never happened to me or ne1 that i know of, but surely some nifty work with the welder can get her up and running! seems like such a little thin to cause such a big problem. is the lump ok other than this?

The lumps fine, I did think about getting it welded, but it's still a bit of a job! I would give it a go myself, but have never used a welding machine before

Arh bugger!!!

Not heard of that happening before mate, i'd be a little worried that it may of cooked something else if the tempterature shot it. As i started reading i was expecting you to say your profile gasket had gone.

If you can use a spanner it a pretty easy job to change an M42 mate, i had mine out in 2hours and i'm not the best when it come to that kind of thing.

dude one of my pipes split on my m30 conversion and it may have cooked the engine? but i know how you feel with the bonnet open and water everywhere.

dude do you have tools? rent a engine lift and do it yourself. its not that hard!

dont know how to split gearbox from engine but get that done, disconnect exhaust, undo engine mounts, disconnect rad, and unclip wire connector and you should be able to lift the engine out!

its not mega easy but it can be done by use driveway people. some people can do it ina few hours. but plan a weekend for a 1st timer and any porblems.

good luck :D

Splitting the gearbox is easy, getting it back together is a pain though!

er pal do you mean the one at the back of the cyl head? That's the one that usually corrodes. There's not one poking out of the block. If it's the head one, its not the most difficult thing to do the cyl head, though with the miles yours has done might be worth swapping the engine. other options include tapping the hole and screwing in a brass fitting or something, the tricky bit would be finding an appropriate fitting.

That's the one Tim, I do know of someone who can fix it for me, but tbh with the extra costs of doing this, it's just not worth it.

Tbh i'm just going to get the 'new' lump dropped in, within the next month, with some new bit's. Timing chain, hoses, gasket's and the like. I'd like a JB flywheel too, but will hopefully get one, when the clutch is on it's way out, due to the wait kedge had for his (1 month  )

Mot's ain't due till end of November, so would like all things in place before then. Fingers X

Bryan,

My getting a lift to work skills are needed again mate! hate not having the car
Funnily enough tho, one of my mates at work, offered to lend me his car, after we finish work..Top Man...even if it is a e46 :)

Guys,

Thanks for all the offers, really appreciate it :)

Bruiser, cheers mate, but i'm just going to get the other lump in there now. Too much hassle to fix it now...

Kedge, thanks for the info mate, i'm going to look into this more.

Gordon, thh mate, i'm not coming to the Pod now :( my brother and a few friends will be there, but with the car in that state it is and my son having a Cup game on Sunday too, it's a no brainer now

Oh well, i'll be back, hopefully bigger and better 8) 8)

Thanks

Make sure you order the clutch kit at the same time as the flywheel if you do go down that route.

Shame your not going to make the pod, what about Stoneleigh in Oct? You might want to actually see what difference the flywheel makes as i'm doing it blind really.

All the feedback from this has been good tbh. So I firmly believe that it will be the 'bollox' :D

If/when I do, do this, I will make sure I get the clutch kit too. What date is the Stoneleigh bash?? If your going, I can check your's out winkeye
