PPC Magazine £999 Challenge

HI
I have a maserati bi turbo, drop me a line on tuning the first thing you need is to fit soom inter coolers if it does not have any, and sort out the mabc system if it is installed as it will not let you up the boost.
But a least you have a lsd and a dogleg box. your spare cash should sort out home made coil overs and adjsutable anti roll bars.
The alloys are 4 stud fiat/alfa fitment if you want a bigger set, and the calipers are e12 4 pots at the front the rear look like e21 2 pots so upgraded pads are no problem.

Team Maseratty started work today!

First thing we looked at was the front brakes which pull hard to the right.
The right hand (4 piston) caliper has one particularly poor piston that is holding the pads against the disc.
No amount of working it in and out helped much so we are going to try and re-seal it or source another caliper.
The front pads are all cracked too and coming away from the backings so new pads are on the shopping list.
We then set about stripping what we could out of it.

This included the glove box and brackets / hinges, front fog lamps (that weren't wired to anything), air conditioning (and we didn't pollute the atmosphere - there was no gas in it anyway!), boot trim and carpet, rear central locking and electric windows, alarm and some sound proofing.

It adds up to quite some weight and maybe a few bits to sell on Ebay!
We also need both steering rack gaiters, some new fuel hose and a few rubber boost hoses.
The air con condenser removal has left a nice big hole to fill with intercooling!

Thanks!
I bought it on Ebay when I was drunk!
It looks much tidier in photos than it really is - it seems the camera does lie!
It doesn't have any major issues - yet, apart from maybe a few 'interesting' areas of bodywork!
Should be a good laugh at York though.
And it's great to drop into conversation when someone asks what I drive and I reply "A BMW and a Maserati, actually!"

hehe! that's such a weapon!
a bmw and a maseriati sounds a lot better than what my fleet will be next week... a rover 414 and a fiat chinqecentpoo!!! (don't laugh, the rover is a true weapon and the chinq was free from a relative and after a 'mystical' imaginary fault so save the family politics, will be sold to the nearest mug!!!) that said, my 335 passed it's mot on friday

Ed hall from PPC Magazine has said on the PPC forum that there are no more places.
I don't know of any other Zoners taking part.
I've read about a few other entrants including 205 GTIs, Golf GTI, Mazda 323 Turbo, Ford P100 V6, Rover diesel and a Jag XJS V12 (which I very nearly went for).
Should be a laugh, if all the cars don't fall apart or breakdown before the event!

As it is only a month away now until the challenge I thought I'd report progress so far!
Work has included :
- Removing rear bumper, spare wheel and carrier, rotten rear silencer. Replacement silencers are being sought - it's a little too loaud at present!

- Replaced connectors and cleaned contacts and earths in all of the (erratic) rear lights,
- Replaced spark plugs
- Replaced perished fuel and vacuum hoses
- Used existing dashboard switches to gain a switch for the (permanantly running with ignition on) fuel pump and a push button starter!
- Removed and measured boost hoses.....

...to plan fitting these!

A pair of intercoolers from Renault 5 GT Turbos!
Bought for £35 from a breaker!
Also awaiting the delivery of a boost valve (like a bleed valve) so we can start cranking up the power!
It's getting there but still plenty of fettling to do!

pure automotive filth! i love it!
the rear end looks a lot like a E30 (minus silly pigtail springs) but with a lot more rust than all but a tech 1 sport!

Got a few more bits done today!
More new fuel hoses, carburettor cleaned out.
Brakes bled and fitted wit new, and rather coool, brake pads!

Renault 5 GT Turbo intercoolers moved into place.

Just got to sort out the plumbing for these now.
We've also won the bidding on a pair of motorbike exhaust cans with removeable baffles today. Pics coming when they are fitted, but they should look

Hmmmm, side exit! ?
I like the idea, when we pick up the exhausts I'll have a measure up to see if that is feasable!
Gareth - forgive my ignorance, what is a screamer pipe?!
Sounds great whatever it is!

it's a plain pipe that connects to the turbo wastegate and screams when you hit full boost

Never seen that before!
I think that might get on my nerves after a while to be honest, and we don't want to drown out the nice V6 growl!
Do they actually do any good or are they just for noise, like most dump valves!

err, a bit less flow through the main exhaust on full boost...
good for scaring children...
dump valves do have a practical benefit, they prevent the turbo stalling when you close the throttle on each gearchange, so it's able to come onto boost quicker in the next gear. plus they sound good. GRRRRR PISSSHHHHHHHHH

A recirculating dump valve works just as well though, as long as it's not running mega boost (it won't be!) The noise of atmospheric dump valves gets right on my booobs too!gareth wrote:err, a bit less flow through the main exhaust on full boost...

I've driven a few cars with noisy dump valves fitted and I felt like a complete chav!
I like the scaring children bit though!
Will definately look into the sidepipes though, I can get exhaust tubing quite cheap.

It's ok, so have I!
We could probably do without getting attention from the police.
By the time we are half way from Kent to York it might have half fallen to bits and all the electrics packed up!

True!
I suppose it depends what silencers you use with the S50, but I'm sure that would take some silencing to be within the realms of social acceptability!
Tastefully done, sidepipes are very

Just a quick update, not long to go now!
The rear brakes / handbrake have been un-seized, cleaned, adjusted and bled on one side but on the other side a broken caliper bolt is causing a bit of hassle!
As the proposed intercooler pipes got right in the way of the battery, that has been moved to behind the passenger's seat.

My team mate Rob found these beauties on Ebay only a few miles from home!

Yes, they are for a motorbicycle but at £81 for two stainless steel rear silencers with removeable baffles (
) and convenient pipe size we, couldn't resist!
It was very straight forward to get a length of exhaust pipe to sleeve the original system to these and knock up some hangars from spare parts in the garage.

Sounds nice deep, V6 throb at idle but it hasn't been driven since fitting them so we don't really know what it will sound like yet!
Also, the bumper needs only the smallest trim underneath where you don't see it to get around the exhausts!
Then we've just got to plumb in and mount the intercoolers and crank the boost up!
