Out of an E28?
If so, they only made about 177bhp I think.

i beleive the e28 528i is based on the m30 big block six engine and is not incredibly powerful but thirsty and heavy, it is 2.8 i think. the 525e is based on the m20 however and is a 2.7.
they are completely different engines

Karan's right about that. The E28 528i had the larger M30 engine while the E28 525e was an M20 based 2.7.
Alpina did fit the M30 B28 to a few E30s (B6 2.8 ) back in the day but only a handful were made. When Alpina finished with the engine it still only made 210bhp (same as an M20 B27, but with more torque probably).
So if your gonna go to the effort of fitting an M30 engine it may as well be B35.
The only 2.8 worth bothering with would be out of the E36 or you could go down the same route as E30 Adam.

I take it the M52 is the one from the E36?

Yep. The M52 was the E36 328i engine and the M50 from the earlier E36 325i

yep. an m52 from a 328i/728i is in my opinion about the best swap into an e30 unless you can afford an m-power engine. m52s make good power and sound absolutely lovely with a few mods such as the 325 inlet manifold.
much better than this old lump!
