Try Nigel Moseley at Moseley Motorsport in Telford - 01952 503 992 if he doesn't want the work he'll know someone more than capable.

Good luck!

ian332isport wrote:Fitting an S50 M3 lump into another E36 is basically a straight swap, and the wiring is plug 'n' play. Fitting it in an E30, is a whole different prospect. It's easy enough to get the basic lump sitting in the bay on it's mounts, but getting it hooked up and running is a huge amount of extra work.

Ian.
Fitting this engine into an E30 is exactly as Ian says. It all looks very simple at the outset. To get it in and sat on the mounts is relatively straightforward. The wiring is difficult going to get it all perfectly right, certainly to the standards a BMW deserves. Not to mention the rest of the work to get it all finished.

My conversion took well over 200 hours of time and cost me in the region of £6000 with me doing the work myself. I also paid reasonable money for the engine in the first place too.

The exhaust manifolds are the major stumbling block and will cost time and £Â£Ã‚£'s. While you're at it you may as well change the steering rack and pipes to E36 items. The oil cooler needs changing around and modifying. The EWS key security is a headache that you will need to tackle. There is cooling to think of as the viscous on the S50 motor won't fit, oh and you'll need an S50 E36 radiator and some offset E30 mounts too.

The gearbox cross member needs to be played around with to get that to fit with an amalgum of BMW bits and pieces. If you want to keep the E36 airbox then you'll need to move the ABS unit over which is a rather intense job. Also, don't forget to change the brake servo to a smaller unit and move it over on the bulkhead by 44mm. You'll also need the dash out to do all of this and to get the wiring into the right place. The plate work for the servo also needs making up and welding into place.

Ooh, you'll probably need an AUDI coupe 25mm brake master cylinder to go with the golf servo that you'll also need to make all of this work together properly.

Also, unless you are lucky enough to have a LHD E36 M3 wiring loom or one from a Z3M coupe, then you will need to make even more changes to the loom to make the ECU fit in the right place. If you are fitting the 3.0 ltr M3 engine then don't forget to make room for the seperate VANOS controller too.....

Then there are more cooling issues to contend with, like where to fit a new expansion and cooling tank, not to mention cutting off the heater matrix pipework from inside the car and re routing it in silicone pipe to fit around the S50 plenum. Come to think of it, you'll probably want the E30 M3 speedo so you can make use of the S50 oil temp sender and the higher rev limit on the tacho that it gives for an M engine - you'll need a device from the US however that modifies the signal output from the ECU so that then tacho reads right though.

Also, you need to get the right wiring pins from RS components so that you can make up the E30 C101 engine loom plug to mate with the corresponding E36 X20 and X69 loom plugs. Lots and lots of soldering! Make sure you get lots of spare wire from the E36 car loom, you'll want loads of that.

I nearly forgot! You'll need an E34 M5 sump and pick up and probably oil pump too - also a sump gasket (do the pump chain too - why not). May as well change the rod bolts for ARP's while you are there. Talking of sumps, you'll want to rework the plenum drainage from the S50 lump. It is in a different place on the M50 style sump so there's some work there. The dipstick needs to be bent and modified too, that is a tricky little job in itself. Also, you'll need the dynamic oil level sensor to fit so that the E30 check control system carries on functioning.

While the engine is out you will want to fit a new clutch too. That sucker won't come back off with the engine in, now way- you'll never get to the bellhousing bolts even with the engine tilted back. You may also want to do all the drivebelts while your at it, they are a bitch to do otherwise. The throttle cable needs changing as well, you'll want the E36 M3 Item and get it properly shortened to suit. Also, all the service items, allow £150 for that lot.

Don't forget those exhausts though. What a nightmare they are! Once you've shelled out a grand for the manifolds to be made then you have to get a system to fit them.

I think that may just about cover it.

Did I mention the wiring by the way?

Good, running documented engines are still 1-1.5k alone, Box £150, Diff £300 oh shit, thats 2k and you still arent close to having something that runs and thats diy

I know. I was wondering if it was the same 'Jason' who seems to be taking credit for Johns work.

Spoke to Jason this morning from E30 Centre, hes done quite a few S50 conversions on the E30 now.

He recently finished one 2 weeks ago for a mate and as it was a mate he just charged £800 to fit the lump and get it running.

If you supply the engine, oil cooler, ecu, a 328 box and a few other bits then he will do the job for £1200.

Where people are getting £6k from i do not know lol

328 box is cheaper than the 6speed e36 box and the e30 m3 box, the better option IMO.

Good point, still way way off my conversion. I only know what I've read from people who have actually done the conversion or contemplated it.

Using the 5 speed box means you DO need the M3 diff.

I still don't see how he can do a proper job for £1200.

Oh well hes done quite a few of them.........

Just because places charge £6k doesnt mean it cant be done a lot cheaper?

Places can charge what they like if they know people are after the conversion, maybe other places are just massively ripping customers off.......
