8O brian, you are truly a legend.

Good to hear nobody was hurt except the car... and top bloody work getting it back on the road. 8)

(great story too, I might tell it to my kids tonight before they go to bed)

Truly legendary, i think there are few who could have put that back together in the time you did and with the tools available to you. Let alone with the whole family in tow.

Glad you are all safe and well. :D

Pity you weren't travelling just a tad faster, then the caravan would have got it instead of the E30! Good to hear you made it back fairly rapidly in the face of such adversity. Great example of ad-hoc repairs

Glad all the family were safe as it could have been much worse if the impact was 5 feet back :(

it's harsh but that touring is now done for. at 250k and damage like that, the insurance company will never pay to fix it. pity. that said, even if it did have a repair, rust would be the next problem.

so, what's going to replace it? another E30 perchance? :D

There should be a Zone Cross medal, and you should get the first one.

Brian, you are indeed a hero of the highest order.
The most important thing - as ever - is that neither you or any of your family suffered any major injury.

No significant rust anywhere and I know every millimetre of that vehicle.
Biggest problem it has (had!) is a collapsing roof lining.
The thread title should give a hint as to what's replacing it!
Forgot to mention in my looong thread that the LH wing is just three weeks old!!!! There was some damage to it and the front panel from a previous minor shunt, and I decided to replace it just before I left. Fortunately I couldn't be bothered to replace the front panel at the same time, so the new one of those is still safely in stock.

Touring will be reborn in the lighter green shell in my sig. (with M50 or M52 engine). In the meantime (after insurance clearance), the engine/box and LPG system will be going into a Malachite green touring after it's M40 1.8 is evicted.

i'm sure it wasn't rusty (tourings rearely are) but after a knock, the old hardened seam sealer is likely to crack and let the damp in.

my drivers doors took a knock least year from some prat during the night. they still opened properly and the windows worked ok but a 18 months on and there is rust scabs around the door hinges from where it's been disturbed.

if the whole shell needs tweaking back to straight, this must occur everywhere and will probably be it's eventual killer.

Seconded. The car can be repaired or replaced, yours and your family's safety is far more important.
Good thing you were in a decently made car. Could have been very nasty in something with less substantial strength.

tbh, you hardly need to buy another to replace it.... Just bust out one of the others!

But mathematically... if its being replaced with a new one, it has to be a non touring... as you already have 6 tourings, and 5 non tourings.

Sorry to hear that Brian - it's amazing how the modern cars crumple isn't it! Wish I had some photos of the brand new peagout 206 that wrote itself off hitting my car - didn't even damage my bodywork (though it did crumple up rear suspension - had to replace rear beam). The Golf looks like a write off, though I suppose it wasn't the golf that hit you. Porsche didn't look too great though. Ever thought of being a field mechanic? Suppose you'd end up working on blown-up landrovers while being shot at in Basra, so probably not a great idea...

Just sent you a (rather long) PM about popping in for a few hours for some advice on my car - hadn't read this thread then, so I understand if you're pretty busy at the moment... hope the insurance company give you a decent amount.
