SuperCharging an M42-Opinions? Whats needed?
Moderator: martauto
cheers lennie, always like to makesure I understand these things. so here's another question... anybody...
What exactly do the pipes to the servo do? and what sort of pressure or vacume are they designed to work with? I'm just wondering when, why and whoch way they operate. sorry I'm an engine n00b

The hose to the servo should only see vacuum which is supplies to the servo.
If you're pressure charging an engine, there should be a one way valve installed in the hose which lets air from the servo travel to the engine, but not back again (when under boost)
Lots of cars seem to have a one way valve installed anyway which I believe is to safeguard against oily fumes finding their way into the servo and perishing the diaphragm.
EDIT> Hmmm, thinking about it, if you connect the vacuum hose inbetween the throttle and the supercharger (the charger's downstream of the throttle with the eaton's isn't it?) then you'd always have a vacuum, even when the compressor bypass valve's open

Thanks turbo-brown. I'm with ypu up until the edit but then I lose you. If the vacume hose is connected between the cahrger and throttle, i.e moved from behind to infront of the butterfly if I understand what you mean.. wouldn't that mean pressure would be applied to the all the time and never vacume?

Aah, don't think I explained it all that well
What you have is:
Air filter-----Throttle body--*-1-Supercharger--2--Engine
So the air comes in through the filter, you meter it into the supercharger with the throttle, the 'charger compresses the air and supplies it to the engine.
Now if you connect the vacuum hose to the bit with the *, you can see that it's on the side of the 'charger that's being drawn from, not blown to so it always sees a vacuum.
Now the bypass valve is connected at points 1 & 2 and typically is operated by a vacuum in hose 2 so that when under light load or when the throttle's shut, the compressor's bypassed. This means that normal engine vacuum exists in hose 2 all the way back to the throttle body and so at point *, there's still a vacuum to operate the servo

ah ah, now I see, it was my error. I always assumed that the throttle body was on the exit of the charger.
if this is the case does the maf also go before the charger?
I always imagined
filter -> charger *-> maf -> tb ** -> engine
* some kind of blow off valve
** brake vacuum with one-way valve
It seems this is incorrect?
I'd not considered a light load bypass system.
cheers.

How did I miss this until now?!
Can I please be added to the list?
I'm going to have a spare iS to play with, so I can try this and/or a turbo before going ahead with putting it on the road car. Should be easy enough to put a user-guide to it at the same time too.

Just to update. I may be up for doing this on my new is engine going in soon, do people not think that more than 170bhp is achievable? I thought the mini superchargers were good to up to 200ish.
Anyway on getting 200! Maybe using two

will the mini supercharger fit on a e30 325, if so how much is it for the turbo, is it difficult to put on. what else would be needed to fit it on.

I'm not ready to fit one yet anyway as I've got other stuff to get so if one turns up for free then all good. if not then it's not the end of the world. but as they say you gotta be in it to win it.

Just pointing out that it seems very unlikely that the event would happen. Why on earth would "Your mate" give these away when he could get Ԛ£150 each for them if he flogged them on Fleabay?
Demlot how about you stop being such an arrogant prick? Its really easy to play the macho man whilst hiding behind the keyboard.

I never called you that. Selling something wouldn't make you, as you so eloquently put it, "a c***"frosted wrote: plus they were free and im not a cu*t.
This mate of your is supposed to have "loads" - so 10 chargers @ Ԛ£150 each is hardly to be sniffed at is it.
eh?frosted wrote: people making comments like ur self and i can understand why people would think sod it ill sell em them.

no im proud. all self made.Wow, your mother must be so proud.
and you really seem like a bloody idiot who is trying to wind poeple up for no reason. cant leave it have to put another post?
4 months not really that long considering he has to be carefull when "aqquiring" the chargers from his work. plus not every bloody mini has the upgrade so it takes a while to get a decent number together.
hurrying up? no relevence to you at all this thread. not planning on using one on the mr2 are you?
