Bike carbs on an E30 - impressive.
Moderator: martauto
Did anyone else look at the Dolphin grey 316 E30 at Gaydon with four Mikuni bike carbs? I drove this last week and it really goes well - must have 120+ bhp on a stock 1.8.
The whole lot cost him £350 with a Bogg Brothers manifold and four secondhand carbs. They are gravity fed from a bike tank so would need a serious pressure regulator to avoid flooding.
I'd imagine a 318iS on bike carbs would be something else. I'll try to get a pic of it later.

I built a mk1 golf gti running a 1.8l 16v lump with Boggy Bike carbs.
They fabricated me a manifold & supplied 4x R1 40mm carbs c/w linkages etc.
It cost me 300.00 for this & the results were brilliant. It was well balanced & responsive also I ran the car through winter and was perfectly drivable in all conditions.
The standard lump fitted with these & a four branch ashley system produced 159bhp at the wheels. That was 19bhp over standard. But it revved alot quicker & was still good on juice.
Check the website out, the quality of there work is brilliant.

Standard 1.8 16v would of been 139bhp at the FLY not the wheels. But a 19bhp gain is good on an otherwise standard lump. Which carbs did you use? 40mm or 42's?carl325i wrote: The standard lump fitted with these & a four branch ashley system produced 159bhp at the wheels. That was 19bhp over standard. Oh ye 139bhp at the flywheel, so roughly about 120 +/-5bhp at the wheels stock. I used 40mm carbs. I also had luminition igntion system fitted to replace the bosch motronic unit, which made it alot more smoother.
Excellent, 320i power from a 318i. It's like we have become Gods etc...Andyboy wrote:Did anyone else look at the Dolphin grey 316 E30 at Gaydon with four Mikuni bike carbs? I drove this last week and it really goes well - must have 120+ bhp on a stock 1.8.
Seriously Andy, why bother?

Car & Car Conversions magazine ran a article on converting a 318is with bike carbs last year.
Gave a very impressive results. Got the article at home somewhere, from what I read, its not hard to do and pretty cheap as well.

If it was all about power, we'd all be driving 300 bhp Subarus. Just an illustration of what can be done for as little £Â£Ã‚£ as posssible. And of course it's also about tinkering.
Btw it was a 316, 90 bhp stock.

try and squeeze 30% power increase out of your motor for £350?
i know i couldnt....
Put 316 engine in the bin. Buy M20 2.5 for £200. Fit it. Voila almost 50% power increase.
We wouldn't be driving Subarus would we dude! You're right about the tinkering though I agree with that. It's just I'd be miffed in 'pushing barriers' and fitting bike carbs etc and still be struggling to keep up with Mr Average in his Crapomatic Econobarge though.Masterbates wrote: If it was all about power, we'd all be driving 300 bhp Subarus. the amouont of time it takes to get them running right etc had to be taken into account as a cost factor even if you do do it yourself.
its fun doing these thing you self but some times i'd rather pay the extra and take the "bolt on solution".
i've read the build up of this car in the club magazone and it does look good, can we expect ti se it in TBMW at some stage andy ?

you would think bike carbs had never been tried on a car before !
lol, people have been sticking bike carbs on cars for years.
austin a+ series engine responded well to bike carbs, however they are a pain to ballance correctly.

You mean this one?

Think the guy gave himself a budget of £1000 including buying the car and wanted to see what he could do.Nice chap tho, spoke to him at Ace and again at Gaydon.

Matts Dad here, Matt has a CNC manifold to fit 1.8 IS m42 engine and a set of vgc hyabusa throttle bodies, he was talking about selling them last week. PM if interested.

You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity
M42 Supercharged 285bhp + M3 6speed box
PM sent
What kind of engine management was the chap using? I'm guessing that is the only real big issue with these!

Heres some pics of my old golf that I built as a track car, running R1 40mm carbs.
The only problem was with this track car that the power was delivered through the wrong wheels.
Steer from the rear I say

My old 1600 pinto in my old capri with keihins:

Andyboy, I used 10mm plumbing fittings to regulate the flow from the mechanical pump to the carbs. This stopped them flooding.

It cost me about £70 to do the whole conversion...
...BoggBros were objectionable on the phone because I made my own manifold.
