Just managed to get my hands on nice low mileage M3 and am wondering what oil is best used in the S14 motor.
Ask the oil man here >> http://www.opieoils.co.uk/

Disagree synthetics are ideal and make a good choice, the best are the ester based synthetics of Silkolene and Motul.
Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 has been well proven.

5w.40 is too thin for an engine that was designed to run on mineral, even now they run Group A cars on Castrol but agreed there are better oils out there than castrol but the basic theroey still stands its the grade that important

Not strictly true, the S14 was designed to run on fully synth and i would not use anything but 10w60 TWS or Edge (same thing) but not Edge sport.dannyboy759 wrote:5w.40 is too thin for an engine that was designed to run on mineral, even now they run Group A cars on Castrol but agreed there are better oils out there than castrol but the basic theroey still stands its the grade that important
Pro S has the same specs as castrol GTX so If you want the best then go for Castrol 10w60.

Its not too thin at all, the recomended grade is an SAE40 when hot, either 5w 10w or 15w when cold, wich kind of works out at 5w-40 synthetic, 10w-40 semi synthetic and 15w-40 mineral. As oil is many times thicker when cold then when hot if it is ever going to be too thin it will be when hot ie using an SAE20 or SAE30.dannyboy759 wrote:5w.40 is too thin for an engine that was designed to run on mineral, even now they run Group A cars on Castrol but agreed there are better oils out there than castrol but the basic theroey still stands its the grade that important
On top of that the engine was not designed to run on mineral, its not inteligent and will not know weather you have put mineral or synthetic in it, its weather you want to protect it better by using a synthetic over a mineral.
On the flipside when most of these cars were produced mineral based were the only real available oils to the end user.

So really they where designed to run on mineral by BMW and if its running good some 15 years or so later you'd have to say adding a top line fully synth oil now is a waste of money.oilman wrote:

Erm no... They were not designed to run on mineral oil, they were desgined to run on oil!
I was saying that if you went to halfords 15 years ago you did not have the choice of synthetics to the end user you have now (so for many years they ran on mineral as that is what haflords etc had), just like still in some countries all they have available to them is cheap mineral oils, not much good having a car if it cannot run on these? So it can run on either and the choice is yours.
Cheers

synthetic > mineral.
They do the same job, but synthetic does more reliably. There are no "compatibility issues" its all oil, just synthetic oil has more of what you want, and less of what you don't.
