Hi,
Just wondering which E36's have LSD, if they do? 328i sport?
What about other Sports such as 525 & 535 (E34)?
Kind regards.

You can have LSD with T/C but I do think E36's came with T/C...
Did any E36's have torsen diffs?

White ones? Find that hard to believe lol!
Anyone know the difference's with the E36 Sports & non-sports? Is it only just the kit & traction control?
Regards.

If an E36 328iS has TC it will not have been fitted with a factory LSD. A very few 328iS cars has LSDs - they started making them without TC and replaced the LSD with TC when they realised they could save a fwe quid.
So... if you want an E36 with an LSD find a very early one (1995 ish - I'm not exactly sure of the build dates), and make sure its engine isnt shagged due to bore wear or that it's had a new one fitted under warranty.
Or instead, look out for an M3 - an easier prospect.

Also... it's all about the suspension -
Saloons, tourings convertibles and compacts all have standard suspension, except for sports models that have m-tec suspension.
All coupes have m-tec suspension except the 328i sport, which is equipped with a bilstein setup called 'Avus'.
So, 328iS cars are desirable because of the bodykit, nice wheels and rare suspension kit (so a lowered or otherwise messed with sport is one to walk away from) but only rarely for the LSD.

LSD is better than traction control for drifting and on a track, but electronic bits and pieces like ASC or ASC+T are a useful safety net on the road.
By the way, Hartge do a nice LSD install for any car, if you've got the cash.

E28 M535i's whether auto or manual have LSD 3.07:1, i have one fitted to my E28 528i. I am told that if you change the back plate it will fit an E30, there is a LSD on ebay as we speak £120 buy it now, which is cheap for an E28.

never knew that, 3.07 is a good ratio for the engine convertors on here.

An e28 M535i lsd will not fit an e30 regardless of what back plate is fitted!jam172 wrote:E28 M535i's whether auto or manual have LSD 3.07:1, i have one fitted to my E28 528i. It has the large size diff and not the medium fitted to the e28 528 which can be made to fit.

Spadge, are you 100% that it will not fit the E30, i felt sure it was only the back plate that is differentSPADGE wrote:An e28 M535i lsd will not fit an e30 regardless of what back plate is fitted!jam172 wrote:E28 M535i's whether auto or manual have LSD 3.07:1, i have one fitted to my E28 528i. Yes mate it won't fit an e30 beam without a lot of modification.jam172 wrote:Spadge, are you 100% that it will not fit the E30, i felt sure it was only the back plate that is differentSPADGE wrote:An e28 M535i lsd will not fit an e30 regardless of what back plate is fitted!jam172 wrote:E28 M535i's whether auto or manual have LSD 3.07:1, i have one fitted to my E28 528i. Wrong boys. The M535i diff (the 210 with the same casing as the E23, 635CSi, E28 M5 and E24 M6) will bolt straight into an E30 rear beam. I've done it myself. The problems are these:
The 210 output shafts are too big for E30 CV joints.
E30 (188 diff) output shafts will not fit a 210 diff as the splined section is too skinny to engage with the sun/planet gears.
E28 or 210 type CV joints will not fit the skinny E30 shafts.
So the only option is custom shafts.
The other issue is the rear cover. E28's use a four bolt diff mount, not the single 19mm nuts and bolt through the E30 boot floor diff mounts. Hartge used a 210 diff in some of their 24v powered cars but they used custon shafts and a specially made diff cover.
Not all M535i diffs are 3.07. Some cars used a 3.45 but they are cat prepped/equipped models although I've seen one over here.
The 210 is a waste of time anyway - there are very few E30's around that will break a 188 LSD. Toby hasn't managed it yet so they must be strong
These are the days when BMW over engineered everything.
The fact that BMW reverted to the 188 diff on the 535i in 1990 tells you all you need to know!

So appart from the fact that the drive shafts and diff cover need to be specialy made it will 'bolt straight in' lol!
So in other words it won't fit then

Exactly what I have been saying. It bolts to the rear beam but everything else is a no-noA 3.07 is a crap ratio for anything other than a decent 3.5 and even then a 188 diff is more than man enough. It's man enough for a 260 bhp B6S after all.SPADGE wrote:So appart from the fact that the drive shafts and diff cover need to be specialy made it will 'bolt straight in' lol!
