Could the engine from the e36 318iS slot straight into an e30 318iS ??
Obviously use all the stuff like AFM, ECU etc etc from the original e30 engine.
Am I right in assuming that, although the e36 version is down on power, this is due to the tighter emissions and cat's etc fitted, but the actual engine is the same, so using the e30 ECU etc will work fine and dandy ???

Not a straight swap. You will need to swap the sump and oil pick up for the E30 items and Im not sure what wiring differences there are.

Cool.
The wiring I don't think is a problem as all that will be used is block and head. All sensors from the e30's engine would be used. The sump and oil pickup swap isn't a problem either I wouldn't have thought.
cheers, just sorting out options for getting my mates 318iS back on the road.

Remember the E36 M42 came in two guises.. the 1.8 and the 1.9.
I'd say for ease, fit a 1.8 one. The 1.9 has a different head and inlet system and I dont know if the 1.8 E30 items/sensors will bolt straight to it.
