Suspension setup...
Moderator: martauto
Want advice for a suspension setup...
It will be on a 318iS...
Just wondering what the best setup would be for a track car...
Not sure about coilovers as I won't be using the adjustability...
What about adjusting camber etc...
Will be going poly bushes and ARBs...
Want to start getting a few things together...

What lb/in are group N springs? Coilovers at the front are a good idea as you will be able to get a lot more front neggy without the standard diameter springs fouling.

Interesting Do tell us moremaxfield wrote:Yes. I was going inverted billies and maybe Grp N springs.

Erm, no it wont, it will help stop the outer shoulders of your tyres wearing from scrubbing and your fronts will last longer. Positive camber is the only stupid cambermaxfield wrote:I don't want to be running stupid camber at the front that will wear tyres out every track day...

full jamex setup on my 2nd tech1 shocks and springs
could leave them in the front legs etc and sort any other bits
this is a very hard setup better suited to the track than a slammed road car
gimme a shout if any good to ya

well what suspension is available
Most basic I would guess is Bilsten shocks (the ones with the 40mm piston) and H and R springs? and at the other end I am guessing there are coil overs.
whats in between and what other options and costs are there?
I am interested as I am going to change the suspension on the 325i when I get round to it and am curently looking for options for the 2.8

just out of interest, apart from dadies wallet, how you are going to insure a 318is and declare modifications & tell the insurance company it is being used on track? I struggle to insure mine at 19 with mods declared and 2 years NCB?
Let alone buying coilovers etc?

Daz - we'll have to chat on MSN, bear in mind I go on holiday again on sunday.
Andy - I think H&R coilovers use inverted billies anyway. Not really sure about spring options but been recommended group N springs.
Dan - I wont be using 'daddies wallet'
But from my own funds.

Not sure yet who ever give me the best quote there is no difference between 318i and iS with a few companies.
Post office seem to be giving best quotes.
Not sure about terms but I don't think I'll be covered for track days.

Says who? A few people on here who have never tried? Trust me there is; they are not stupid and if it was that simple a lot more people would be doing it with a lot more cars. When you type in a registration number on an insurance sight it comes up with 318is 16v. if you get insured under your name as yoru first car il be mightily impressed!maxfield wrote:Not sure yet who ever give me the best quote there is no difference between 318i and iS with a few companies.

i thought insurance companies had gotten wise to that dodge years ago and had changed the rules to try to put a stop to it? doesnt the policy holder risk losing all their no claims should any named driver have an accident? and are named drivers still covered fully comp on someone elses policy or are they only 3rd party? theyre not silly ,they will realise that a modded 318is isnt really mrs maxfields mums main car to potter to the shops in.maxfield wrote:I won't be under my name! for a 1.0l corsa it's close to 2k![]()

I'll be under either my mum or my dads name!
It's called a 'fronted policy' and many companies seem to have wised up to it. I enquired about insuring my 335 under my dads name with me as a named driver and they couldnt quote. I then asked about a policy in my own name and they quoted me straight away. Not sure if this is the same with all insurance companies now?

RS200's? bloody hell, that's one serious shopping wagon!!!
my second car was a MK2 RS2000 X-pack with a 2.1 burton pinto,, upgraded brakes, big valve flowed head, full rally cam, twin 45's, 4 branch, group 4 bilstein coilovers etc etc etc. all for £850 tpf&t with all mods declared, parked on the road, no alarm required and i was 18
the recent hike in insurance prices sucks!!!!
that said, i'm now 27 and i'm paying £350 on the 335i touring with leda coilovers, wms brakes etc etc etc.
go on max, let me know some of your quotes! my all time record was £15.5k basic third party!!!!!!
i take it they didn't want my business!!!

RS2000's my dad used to be really into fords so she got to drive them all...
Think the most was about 11k for my dads M3...
Cheapest was about £800 for a 316i garaged etc.
318iS seems to be close to the £1500 mark.

max, i see! there's a lot in that last '0' you know
are those prices in your name and all 100% up front? on thing i've noticed, adrian flux (been with them for years) are cheaper once the car is modified
fuzzy, that was at 19 on the RS2000

i think you can still get insured under your dads name with you as a named driver, but you must claim if you have had an accident when it comes to a renewal/new policy (if you have one) rahter than letting your dad take it on, and he will be the one that biulds/looses NCB, you will not gain any
you will most likely not be able to drive other cars thrid party on you fully comp insurance even if its in your own name

can you claim on your own though if your only a named driver on someone elses policy? its like them acting as a guarantor on your behalf so if you crash they lose out.
my insurance didnt go down with my mods. it went from £515 for a 325 touring to £630 with the cossie conversion fully comp.

Fuzzy is correct, your dad will lose his no claims when you stack it into a lamppost

back on topic,
a recent front runner in the seloc seris ( now production bmw seris) was using inverted billies and the turner motorsport J stock springs, simila to the H&R group N ones avaible.
the shocks a very very good, arguably the best and with one of the abouve springs sets will give you very good handling.
add the eibach ARB's and some new bushes will give a very tight good handling car, a similar set up to what i had on my IS.
OE b,w off set top mounts will work well.
coilovers and adjustable camber for rear arms, and alloy top mounts etc will endup costing too much and are best left for a dedicate dtrack day car J, if this is the future for the car it can be done a t a later stage. i was thinking about it if i had kept my IS, i would have done it
brake upgrades, keep it stock with good pads, ferodo ds2500 , pagid blues etc. braided lines are a good up grades as well.
the list is endless of what you can do on brakes suspension steering, BUT you need to know where to draw the line. you need to fing the right ballance and compromise mate.
as for telling your insurance company, its up to you but.........
shocks are OE ones , springs ( unless you are stupidly low ) they wont really notice, but ARB's the will. polly bushes you bcan argue that the are an OE repplacement etc. what they dont like are engine mods, but cmas they can see, nor alloy flywheels etc. there is lots you can get away with
things like exhuast and wheels declare, but they wont load up your premiunm too much for it, most dont even bother these days for the fact almost every car has alloys, and a stainless exhust can be argued again that its a bespoke system replavcing an OE one which perishes with time, its just got a fancy tail pipe
