No Temperature Reading! Help!

I recently purchased a 1990 318i from a good friend, and he informed me that he had had the radiator replaced about 3 months ago as it was not cooling the engine sufficiently. The problem now is that there is no temperature reading at all. When I turn the ignition on, the temperature needle moves onto the cool (blue) part of the gauge and stays there. Even after normal driving , it just stays there. My first thought is that the temperature sender unit is faulty, but I am not too familiar with BMW motors. Where is it located? Any help would be much appreciated!

change the brown temp sensor on the thermostat housing. (its next to the blue 1)

Not on a 318 M40 it's not.
It's hidden away in a "how the hell do I get to that place" under number 3 and 4 inlet ports.
Try to unplug the connector and short the wire to the car body. Should send the temp gauge to full red. If it doesn't, it's not the sender.
