What is the point of it all , i reckon you should just drive the damn thing , although there is a lot of sense in looking after the motor , but unless you know the full history of every driver that has ever owned the car there seems little point !
After all whats to say some little scrote didnt own the car for a couple of months and absolutely rake the arse off it , the damage would have already been done !
But at the end of the day its your choice , i just get in and drive , and enjoy it , and im gonna worry about it when it goes "BANG" !
Plus , come on , secretly every one of you cant wait to get the engine in bits to rebuild it ! ! !

You should at least let it warm up though Jibs, tempting fate otherwise!
Unless you really, really want the engine in bits!

i've been watching this topic and not known whether to add my bit or not. i don't know if i'm obsessed or abnormal or what but i:
- never start the engine for any short journey. if it needs moving i push it.
- always take my shoes off to drive it to save mat wear, pedal dirt/wear and stop shoe heal wear
- always let it ideal for about 90 seconds before driving it
- never strain it in low revs or rev it past 2k until warm and 5.5k after
- never move the steering wheel unless the car is moving
- use the wipers unless vision is comprimised (not like most drivers who put wipers on full pelt at the first drop to touch the screen)
- never wind down the windows if there's water on them
- never get the rear sideways
- never complete a journey without cleaning brake dust off the wheels when i get home
- always check the car at least twice a day for bird cack and wash it off straight away
- always do my own servicing and clean everything that comes off/is revealed until it shines whether it can be seen or not
- never pull the handbrake up past just enough to not stretch the cable
- never allow any passengers to eat any foods in the car that might have any salt content
- never park it within touching range of another car's doors even if it means taking 2 spaces in a car park
sounds like a nightmare i know but once all the above become habit it's normal. the result is that my car is pretty mint - as those that have seen it can testify. not only that but all the controls work and feel just like the car is still brand new.
hope you don't think too badly of me now...

Ah Paul a man after my own slightly obsessive heart!!!! hahahaha
I don't quite ygo the extents you do but I have taken note of a few of yours on the list and will start to practise them.
I took my 10 month old daughter out last night to the main stealer and thank god I had the window lock button pressed down otherwise she would have been flung out!!!
Bloody haribo's all over the carpet and she even managed to tip her juice bottle upside down and poor orange all over the passenger door and centre console, little minx! Needless to say she has been banned from the beemer for a year and grounded for 6 months!
I did try and make her clean it all up but she didn't wanna know!

Some good stuff there Placey!
Your car will be minty though!!
Some of those I agree with, some are a bit over the top of what I would do, the 'rear sideways' one springs to mind first!

daryll - that's well funny.
we have a daughter (14) that sometimes manages to talk me into being taxi-dad. when her friends get in they almost always comment about how clean it is and daughter pipes up 'just sit still and don't touch anything and you won't upset him!'
i'm sure there's more obsessive things i practice too - if i think of them i'll post them.

well......
i let it warm up.... not going over 2.5k until its warm and not loading it too much....
once its warm all hell breaks loose!
when im not pushing it though im always in 5th gear by 30mph.... and STAY there....
i service it meticulously though.... oil every 2.5-3k miles...
clean it regularly too in all the right places....
i just love getting it in and driving it hard..... i think its fine with regulkar maintenance.... and uprated parts where it counts..... im pretty sure the lump itself will go on and on....
