This is my project 335, wanted to get it all done for under a grand and keep the chrome sleeper feel. so far I've spent 650 including the purchase of the turd.
In the beginning



starting the strippng


some new wheels


front end painted,chrome sorted and smilies fitted


fuel pump fitted and extra pipe plumbed in ( car was a 316 carb so no electric pump)


golf servo


525e diff


E32 aircon fan


Audi A6 2.8 back box



rear disc conversion, rear arb and some underseal sorts out the back underneath, oh yeah and new brake lines

Patiently waiting for its lump


engine and rad finally in and the end is in sight


coil moved and battery stuck in the boot




front end on larger diameter struts mtech springs and thicker ARB,rear end still on standard shocks and springs, for the moment.

john, thats awesome. Im literally just behind you in the conversion. Got my engine in today, mine was also a 316, can you elaborate on how youve sorted the fueling? Ive plumbed an inline fuel pump, just wondered if youve swaped the tank to an injection version. Im intrested in your diff choice also, explain? im using the standard one for now (rev limiter at 110mph anyone?). Cheers Alex btw do you work at halfords?

hello mate, mine is a pre facelift m10 engined one, the tank is the origional with an E30 m40 engined, in tank pump fitted ( fits in the same hole as the sender) then I fitted an extra pipe for a fuel return.
The diff is off an E28 5 series 525e. This diff is only really any good if you are using a dogleg box from a e28 m535i. If yours is a normal box I would go for a 3.64 diff from a early 325i. Spotted the jack eh? Useless piece of crap that is.

'Cheap as chips' Speaking of which will probably be the only engine mod. My next job will be five stud conversion, but that will be years away. I work slooooowww. Oh yeh, the colour is saturn blue used on prefacelift e30, e28 and e24 I think

Because mine was carb not injection it had a mechanical fuel pump which doesn't require a fuel return pipe back to the tank. all injection models do have a return fitted.
Yes the pump fits straight in.

Did you use the standard fuel feed line? If so are you not worried about it exploding under the 10x higher fuel pressure?

Also, that extra fuel line (return) you just ran that to the right side of the pump, correct?

Sorry it's the same question but it's something I'm going to have to do in the next few weeks and knowing that the pumps are interchangeable has just made me a very happy bunny! Cheers. Also, what you doing about electrical connections to it? Still the same?

And what are you doing about general wiring, this is the main bit that is worrying me. I had to play about with wiring fitting my e34 3.5 into my e28, but this is a different kettle of fish. If you could post up what you plan to do then that would help a lot!!

All flexible fuel lines have been replaced. All the answers you want depend on what model you are converting. Also if its a prefacelift is it a later one with the large c101 electrical socket on the bulkhead. Let me know and i'll try and answer as many questions as I can, or someone else will

Thought I'd update an old thread ( not that I've done a lot lol)

Wired up the two speed fan with a couple of old relays and a N reg 525 temp sensor whiech fits the same hole on the side of the rad.

Heres the relays, using the old relay mount, which will have the plastic cover on it

The temp sensor mounted, normal speed at 91 c, High speed at 99 c.


Used an old type coolant header tank with some home made mounts, It sits higher than the newer type so bleeding might be easier.




Modified a m40 engine top mount to hold the rad in



It can now run for longer periods and I've noticed that the water pump has a lot of play in the pulley Why don't I listen to every other zoner thats done this conversion.
Sittng there patiently waiting for me to get my thumb out of my ass, its been nearly 3 years now

Thanks guys. Brian, the minute I saw that you had posted I thought I was in for a grilling about my use of relays etc . The high speed one is alfa romeo, it is new so should last a month or so.

Just had a very bad experience with a 156, owned it for 3 months and it spent most of that hooked up to the diagnostic machine with several alfa technicians scratching there heads. I took it back to the dealer in the end and got a little mazda 2 to run around in. I'll use that until the project is on the road and then the mazda will replace my very tired Nissan almera commuter biatch! You try handling 61bhp in the wet !
Well thats my life story. Apart from the fact that me and the misses regret ever getting rid of the 320.

here is the old girl, still going strong with her new owner though

that's such a nice shell, i'd love to have my engine etc in an old chromer like that

header tank position looks like a very sensible idea too, the facelift 325i tank always looks a bit suspect to me when you see how high the thermo housing/bleed screw is... although people don't seem to have trouble once they're bled. i have to disconnect my tank and hold it right up against its coolant pipe to bleed mine properly

i did notice the header tank and was interested by that. its good to look pictures of other engine bays to see what people have done.

Thanks for the comments guys, The shell is good but not perfect. The passenger door and rear quarter need some love.
It bled okay,heater valve open and alternatly squeeze the top and bottom rad hose until you feel them stiffen up slightly(full of fluid), then open the bleed valve and more of the same, worked for me

The Baur was run over by a 60 tonne tank and looking at it we reckoned that if the driver had layed across the seats he would have survived (obviously driver wasn't in it lol ).
