6x9's yes or no???

Hey guys, im wanting to upgrade the speakers in the e30 coupe, and wanted to fit 6x9's on the rear, i want to get decent sounds without fitting subs (they just got nicked twodays ago, along with 3 amps and my WHOLE car ) whats involved in fitting them to the rear?

and also, should i or should i not??

What makes you say that? I bet a set of 6x9s from a company like MBQuart will sound pretty good.

Don't cut the metal shelf - it's structural...

I mounted mine on MDF rings, but you can buy proper spacers for them (if someone knows where, please tell me )

Sounds ok, better than factory anyway. Proper decent components and a sub would sound better though

Physics! It produces a better sound wave.

Totally agree, I am not saying any round speaker will beat an oval design as manufacturing quality etc come into play but from a fundamental-all-things=being-equal situation.....round cones are better. If you have the choice then this design should win everytime.

Right guy's im going to tackle this today, how do i take the back shelf off, the carpet bit?

You need to remove the rear seat - bottom bit just pulls out, backrest has 2 x 10mm screws, 1 either side at the bottom. Once they are undone, lift up and out.
Shelf will just pull out then...

cheers bimmaman. shelf is now out and have come to the metal shelf, i do want to cut into this, but there are two round lumps of metal, with threaded holes. what are these for? can i just cut thorugh them?

...i did this to mine with the help of Keg_gt about 6 months ago...

to get the shelf out i think you have to undo the two outside rear seat belt mounts (bottom left and bottom right corner) and then the shelf slides out and up ever so slightly.

to make the holes we made a template of the 6x9's and then marked the ovals in the wooden (or cardboard or mdf or whatever) and then drilled a big hole, and then cut them out with a jigsaw.

then we put the shelf back in and drew around the insides of the holes with a marker. (it does make the hole in the metal slightly smaller, but it doesn't matter, the 6x9's will still fit due to their conical (ish) form)

then we chain drilled (one hole next to another) just inside the marks all of the way around with about a 4-5mm drill bit (yes it takes about an hour a side)

then filed the edges of the holes smooth...just because i know it's neat, if you are lazy then you don't have to because you can't actually see the matel bit!

then put the wooden shelf back in, stick the seatbelts back together,

we drilled holes in the wooden part for the 6x9s while it was out of the car...then we matched those to a smaller pilot hole in the shelf by putting the drill bit through the holes in the wooden bit (1 90 degree angled drill would make this much simpler)

the just screwed the 6x9s in, wired them up....stereo away!

using slightly longer than usual screws to go into the metal work is far better as it clamps the shelf and the speakers down in 8 differet places, so it rattles much much less...which is good if you have a very bassy pair of 6x9s

the previous owner did this to my car (never told me when i bought it) and made a right mess of things, i only found out when i changed the parcel shelf and about sliced my arm off on the sharp metal.

You can get a 'nibbler' either on its own or an attachment to an electric drill, which makes jobs like this much neater and with no sharp spikes.

The nibbler is also very fast and quiet, makes a lovely job of eating lines and curves into sheet metal.

Yeah, I am having a similar issue with 6*9s on my parcel shelf, knocked together some mdf boxes for them in my mates unlces workshop(nice and easy) so i didnt have to cut the metal shelf..... , and it lifts the magnet nice and clear from the metal shelf so as not interfere with the speakers performance, and aims them forwards in the cabin

unfortunately in my excitement to make these boxes up, i never measured up the space on my parcel shelf..... muppet eh, of course sods law stating that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, means they dont fit, so i now have to make these boxes smaller, while still being able to fit my 6x9s

a few people have murmered something to me about restricted visibilty, but i mean, can be no worse then having headrests fitted.... or those estate/people carriers you see wit so much crap in the back you cant see out can it, anyone know the law on this (i suppose i should being a copper an all), yeah, once i finally have my design sorted i am going to put that carpet stuff round em you get on sub boxes...... bloody diy'ing

i bought a set of universal spacers by autoleads for 6*9s for 15 squids, but they didnt fit, bloke in the shop didnt belive me, but honestly did not fit, they were too wide at their widest point.... ohwell argued with him and got my money back, eventually.....

Here's my 6x9s... Not sure what thickness the MDF is, but speakers fit spot on - and no shelf cutting wrongness!
