Hi guys
Sorry if this is in the wrong section
Can any of you guys using standalone management systems recommend a usb to serial adapter as my laptop only has usb ports
And
Can you tell me which ones you've had problems with.
Thanks in advance
Dave

Not an exact parallel, but I know that LPG installers tend to seek out older laptops to use, as the adapters don't seem to work.
Laptop I use for LPG doesn't have USB ports (or even a CD drive) and cost me £15!

generaly they all work, just depends if you get the correct drivers.

I had problems trying to get one to work with MS.............
Just needed to fiddle with the options although it took a while. I think I had to turn off the buffering.

It's going to depend on how the megasquirt software has been written, if it's using windows to manage the com ports then all should be fine. If it's accessing the com ports directly then u're probably going to have problems ! Only way is to try it.

No problems with MS. The only thing I found, was that you always have to use the same USB port each time, otherwise windows assigns a different com port for the adapter.

Something for me to consider BrianBrianmoooore wrote:Not an exact parallel, but I know that LPG installers tend to seek out older laptops to use, as the adapters don't seem to work.

If I can find one cheap enough then it would be a viable option

there's one issue with te USB to DB9 conversion.
the read/write speed to the ECU can be affected quite badly, and can result in some table corruption as odd bytes are missed out.
Serial is best, I use a dock to get two proper comms ports, allows you to log on one and tweak on the other too, bonus. I've ordered a comms card with twin DB9 for my laptop, fed up with the dock, its bulky and squeaks lol !
DTA is great in most versions dude, software a little overcomplicated IMHO though.

Cheers for the input
Where are you getting the comms card?
Depending on cost, might be interested in going that route.
BTW
Its the "old" E48 EXP ecu with the latest software from the DTA website
Bit cheeky asking
BUT
Don't suppose you'd have a suitable base map by any chance??
For a std facelift 325 engine on a set of Suzuki throttle bodies(for now, prior to theT4 being fited)
I only ask as the ecu is from a rally car with a map for a 4 cylinder.

Dave, the Comms card is a Toshiba unit, there are belkins available to suit vaious Lappys, have a look on Dabs or similar dude, what model laptop are you using ?
my old tosh satellite EX ( 1990 spec) was plenty good enough, although the screen was poor in low sun conditions, had serial on the motherboard too.
Reminds me, my old VAIO has a serial port hidden under a flap on the back, about the only good thing about the POS
Re the DTAwin map, I'll have a look, TBH not used it for a while, too many other toys

AMD Turion 64x2 dual core processors/1 gig ram/multi layewr dvd re writer etc etc.
Will have a look on Dabs/Amazon etc
IF you can find a DTA map, that would be great
ANY 6 pot map would be a start(even 1 for a std motor),can add the throttle bodies in the future if needs be.
Just need to get it fitted and running(with a small mod to the loom)
P.S.
Will probably be emailing you soon RE some Turbo parts

If you still havent found a Usb adaptor that works emerald do one that works. when i bought my emerald they suggested i use a special kind of adaptor that uses a certain chip as they had a lot of trouble with people using any old adaptor.
the one they sell is £14 iirc and they post them out next day if its any use to you.

Old thread but an update none the less.....
Serial to USB adapter that works....
PC world, purchase the "newlink" unit, cat number ZP43 USB to D9 male.
I've yet to have an issue with this, tested on 5 brands of standalone ECU ( MS,VEMS, OMEX, DTA and Emerald )
Was under a tenner too, worth a sniff.

Cheers Ant
Found one as well
Seems to work ok on the DTA
It's unbranded (off Ebay)
Comes up as Motorola when it's plugged in though
P.S
I don't suppose you managed to come accross a usable base map for a DTA?
For a M20B25 std except for a set of 38mm thottle bodies???
