id been having strter problems with what i thought was the starter not engaging.....so solenoid problem....however i realised the starter was wobbling around, so i got under to see the bolts that hold it on the gbox bellhousing and to my utter disbelief is saw that the bellhousing was cracked........how the fcuk did this happen---is it cos of excessive drifting and clutch kicking?-probably is/..

there is also a hairline crack on the bottom opf the bellhousing

couldnt have happened at a worse time with exams etc... at uni at the moment, when i really need the car to get to and from bristol from london-140mls

worse thing is i am currently in bristol and need to get it home...i think it should be fine if i take it easyinsh o the mway and keep gear changes to a minimum-and onviously i'll have to jumpstart it too!

damn cars hey!

anyone else done something similar?
luckily i have a spare box and was meaning to change it neway! along with the linkage bushes etc......

heres some rappy phone pics from under the car:

2 shots of the hairiline crack at the bottom:

Fair play. 8O
If thats from drifting - true hero damage

You said you had vibrations from the prop. Could that have caused it??

dunno what caused it---i reckon its the drifting--ive been driving it very hard as of late.... and a late night drift session last night prob finished it off...

i think it may be possible something got caught in the flyweheel and as it rotated it hit the starter and caused starter to shear off with a piece of bellhousing with it...... this could prob explain it.....

as a precaution its getting a new box(obviously) with new bushes on linkages, new prop, new centre coupling, new doughnut, new gbox mounts, and the driveshafts also have some play-goddam drift damage

Starter probably ripped some teeth off the flywheel and wasnt meshing properly. Probably caused the above

Simon....the GUG is a soldier and will be back with a vengeance i assure u!

she still runs and i gotta drive her 140mls home next tuesday like this-taking it easy of course!

the car generally takes whatever i throw at it.....remember the old girl has done almost 170k now!!!!!!!!!!! much more than the other cherished sports out there like ures etc.... i just dont cut corners when it comes to maintenance.. like now im gonna do everything in the area while its all open. Not many cars out there that have had 3 enthusiastic owners own them and an engine from the man himself.....LOL

im considering lightening the flywheel while its all open.....

its a pretty easy job anyway and shouldnt take that long to be honest.... gonna get my dad to do it all as i am busy nxt week.... thank GOD for ECP selling OE parts at ECP prices, and thank god i have a spare box....

may change the flywheel also-gonna get a spare from Jon anyway just in case the teeth on it are shagged.....

i desperately need a s1itter of a 325 to cane around and mess about in... it hearts my heart to see the GUG broken

Just goes to show what happens when you throw this level of abuse at your car.........things break. In this case they break big pieces of the gearbox!

I wonder whats going to break next?

id just like to add.... that id like to say it was hero damage.... but i think it can be classed as indirect hero damage:

the reason it happened is cos i had been having a prop vibration.... this caused sump bolts in the lower bellhousing to come loose.... these got stuck in the flywheel teeth and pushed the starter which is mounted in the bellhousing upwards...... so its NOT cos of clutch kicking etc as such.... although the prop vibration and worn rear UJ were the causse of vibration in the prop..... it was my own negligence really as i knew the vibration was bad but i did not have time and really needed transport of the non-public variety.

since ive had the car its undergone a rolling rebuild LOL:

some bodywork
shock mounts
arbs
interior sorted-carpet out job!
ignition system
brakes
exhaust mountings
gear linkages
manifold
electronic/alternator niggles
new prop and mountings/bearings
steering rack
wheel bearings

theres so many things i cant remember... but its sure kept me busy the past year!

its important to remember the car has done 170k miles now and i bought it on 150k!!!!! so 20k in a year ive done and ive always been able to drive home if somethings gone wrong via bodges.... so its never left me stranded!-not bad for a tuned motor that gets driven like every e30 should be.

and sal as u know..... i wouldnt swap it for even an m3

Karan... on my first E30, a Mk1 325i Sport, I did something similar with excessive 'hi-rev clutch releasing' antics...

The car just came to a stop after dumping the clutch in true 360 degree hero-ness...

Turns out I fractured the flywheel, shattered the clutch completely, blew the ECU (how I did that, I'll never know) and a few other bolt shearing things... was nasty.

Had to get towed home from the sea-front with everyone looking at me... great!

That was a lonnnnnnnnnng time ago though... 10 years in fact. Jesus!

Fair points Karan but the way its driven really does increase the wear rates of alot of components.

The way your e30 is driven is not the way every e30 should be driven. If this was done then not alot of e30's would be on the road today.

For one most of them would have been crashed due to hero damage

and then you would have shagged gearboxes, diffs, joints of all sorts, engines.........just worn everything really.

Anyway, as long as you dont kill someone in the process its all good fun.

they're just components and they can be changed....... i dont really stress the engine excessively to be honest like i know some people do......

within myself i know im not gonna get carried away...... cos its happened when i just started driving and nearly lost it when i was driving beyond my skill! i only ever push like 80% now...... this is only now and again... you seem to think the car's driven like a hero chariot every living moment...however i actually drive like a granny most of the time trying to get good fuel consumption-im not joking

That Gearbox looks f***d mate!

I gota agree with you, i dont rag my car much anymore (not that its raggable lol). Not only am i trying to cut down on fuel, but the amount of police around my area now is ridiculous.Gota watch out for Dog units, old volvos, new Astras, eveything, seen so many motors with old bill in. I just got back from a drive infact, and had somone in a slightly chavved up vectra right up my arse. I purposly drove at the limit and really slowly, .... he pulled past and i was still crusing at 30mph.......much 'cooler' just taking it easy!
