wasted by a fiat marea estate in the M3

this is by no means a lie, today i went up to bicester to drop my rather sorry looking M3 off to the bodyshop for some much needed love (the heat sheild for the exhaust fell off on the way too) and i arrived at my fathers house to hear him boasting about how fast his marea tdi estate is.

At this point im ripping the piss, he said oh yeh you wait it'll have your m3... yeh ok dad what everrrrrr!

he's fitted some propane system to it, something he's marketing at the moment, i dont know much about it at this stage other than my experience today.

Anyway we drive out of his village and i see him raise his hand then count down from three than bang as soon as i see knuckles im accelerating from 3rd ready to overtake, then nothing, not even sooty smoke, he just pulled away redlined it up into 4th never even made it to 5th and he was maybe 4-5 car lenghts in front.

I was well and truely owned today, especially when he told be he never changed down he just put his foot down in 5th and started backing off when the clutch was slipping, all that from a standard fiat marea tdi with gas....maybe my M3 has issues

A mate of mine at work has a Skoda Fabia VRS - the 1.9 turbo diesel sporty thing.

A few times we have ended up having a bit of a dice down the lanes to work, and my E30 335i does have trouble seeing him off!

And if it's wet I have no chance, he laughs when he sees me slithering around in third gear and his traction control and six speed gearbox is making good use of his 230lb/ft of torque!

I bet I know who's having a more fun / exciting drive to work though!


That propane gas thing sounds very interesting, any more details?

ive not got much info on it at the moment, its something new that my father is marketing very shortly, basically if you own a tdi, this setup will make your car silly fast and stupidly cheap to run according to my father, i guess its like lpg for petrol cars but this is like having nos in the tank

Im still in shock tbh, im even half considering shopping the E36 touring in for a tdi just to experience the fun

the modern diesel is an amazing lump, our boss at work has just got a brand new top of the range audi a6 3.0 tdi quattro. hes had it superchipped. supposed to be putting out over 500 ftlbs of torque. its just amazing, the way you put your foot down the auto box flips thru a couple of gears and in what seems like a miniscule amount of time your doin 120!! why people bother buying the new rs4 i dont know ive driven a couple ands its just not that fast!!

propane = lpg (ish). afaik LPG is usually a butane / propane mix.

i know diesels do work well on LPG, as will any FI car as it's a higher octane rating and comes out of the bottle chilled!

my mate (tommyc on here) has fabia vrs and h said he read (on the briskoda forum ) about a fabia vrs on lpg that was getting something like 250bhp and 380lb.ft and an equivalent of 70mpg around town
i'm not bothered though, i like the smell of petrol and driving sideways!!!

I think he's getting silly Mpg out of it too, hence why i was thinking of getting a tdi and fitting it, i tend to do alot of miles so, 70mpg is quite attractive especially at that speed

There's nothing particularly new about this - it's the equivalent of nitrous for diesels. You feed propane vapour into the diesel's air inlet and it is ignited in the combustion chamber by the diesel igniting under compression.
Just holding an unlit propane blowlamp near the air intake will give the effect.
The problems arise in metering the propane flow in such a way as to prevent the engine going into self destruct mode.
Power gains can be considerable, and a slight decrease in running costs can be achieved, simply because there is less road tax on the propane compared with diesel.

i spoke to him just now and he said he's fitted the same system to his mates fiat doblo van and because its so fast it causes near misses on roundabouts because drivers pull out thinking they will pass in time he also said it spins wheels in 3rd!!!

After re-reading my inital post i thought it may come across that way but it was'nt intential i was just a bit shocked at how fast a crappy tdi marea could be so quick!!

I have nothing to do with what he's marketing/developing i refurbish and sell wheels lol

made my mind up today that i want a bike now for work instead of a tdi car, they are economical and i wont have to wait in traffic for hours on end

Yeah, Audi diesel won LeMans this year and last year! Peugeot diesel also came second this year.

The diesel LeMans cars are strangely quiet too!

In my country many ppl use metan in the car,
wery cheap , but one down side the tank is too heavy and usualy into car like Lada Samara they put 2 tanks so it's pretty heavy
the pressure is around 60 atmosphears and LPG is 15 -20 atm. but it's god damn cheap

Sorry but i had a 150bhp 6 speed golf for a few months and i can assure you it would not see off a 1.8t GTI no where near!

Until it goes wrong. Any idea how much VAG injectors cost? BMW 3.0d's are horrid things. The injectors seize into the head rendering the head scrap or at least in need of serious work. Because the injectors fit on top of the cam cover you can't even access the head bolts to remove the head and get them pressed out. I've seen main dealers using bastard great slide hammers and STILL they don't budge. Tales of engine cranes being used and a car being lifted on an injector (!) are not unknown.
The diesel was at it best in stuff like the old 405 Peugeot TD, Mondeo TD etc. Not the last word in refinement but they went okay, were reliable and easy/cheap to fix.
New stuff is great when it's new but awful when it's done a few miles. Injectors, turbos, air mass meters, ECU's are all a nightmare.
I can see petrol engines coming back at some point, a big capacity long stroke low revving engine with a light pressure turbo. BMW developed he Eta concept and the 524td at the same time and the Eta was the better car. It had better economy (28 average and 35 on a run) and was a lot nicer to drive. However BMW, obsessed with out-doing MB - concentrated on the diesel which was a shame as the Eta could have been developed into something really good capable of 45 mpg.
