How are you getting on with the broken studs ? I had to drill one snapped stud out and hellicoil it, sods law but i can't find the bloody kit or i could have post it off to you

At least you got the hard bit out of the way when you had some help, nice one Theo

Yeah, thanks to Theo we got the heavy work done without me ending up injured and a complete cripple!
Thanks Andy but no worries, I'll probably drill it out and nut and bolt it to match the other stud in that manifold that broke when I first did the conversion!
Haven't got time to order the proper stud and this is only a temporaryish engine anyway.
It will be interesting to see how a standard engine compares to the modified one that came out!

Are you putting your cam in this lump ?
Nah, not doing a thing to it except oil and filter change.
I took the rocker cover off and it is soooo clean and new looking in there I wouldn't be surprised if it's had a top end rebuild or just been very, very well looked after.
I'm (hopefully) just going to concentrate now on re-rebuilding my other engine to run turbo and sort out it's niggles!

How much boost are you planning ?
I'm just thinking if you're going big boost then may be a 745 long engine would be a good starting point(lower C/R + piston oil squirters) ?
Having said that Toby's is a beast with just 7psi

I know, a 745i engine would be ideal, but I've never seen one come up for sale outside of America!
I'm wondering if it's possible to have the block machined to take oil squirters for the pistons. People did/do it with Austin Rover 'A'-series engines.
I'm wondering about having a small amount machined off the top of the pistons to lower the compression ratio.?
I'm not planning more than 10psi boost as it's my only car and don't want to constantly breaking clutches, driveshafts, diffs etc.!
It's going to be a long way off before I finish this, mainly due to cashflow and it's a lot of work I expect so just got to take my time.

DIY squirters should be doable, i read ages ago about some one doing it on MyE28.com, cooler pistons give you less chance of knock.
If you're only going as high as 10psi the stock C/R(9.0:1) should be fine so long as tune is OK i'd have thought ?
If you do have the pistons machined(sp?) leave the squish area alone.

Oh right! Maybe I'll leave the pistons then!
I'll definately use a the thicker head gasket this time too as the head has had a light skim.
I need to research MS ecu and stuff too as I know little about it at the moment!

Ant's your man for MS, shame he's so far from me as it'd be nice to have a top mechanic like that near here.
He's very near me!
I'll probably go to him when the time comes!
My girlfriend is very pleased I've got a load of work to do on my engine again!

Which exhaust manifold are you going use ?
TCD do a RHD manifold now and Jon Volk(sp?) does a top mount manifold that looks ace but it's pricey !

As I have little money to spend I was intending to design and make my own (Toby Unna style / coppying!) as I have more time than cash available to do it.
I still need to source a suitable turbocharger to fit.

I haven't yet, but they are on my vast list of things to do / buy / make!
I'm hitting the sack too, going to Colchester Zoo tomorow (well, in a few hours!) and I can't wait!
I'm hoping to see some real live scampi!

looks like you've been having fun though. i would have been tempted to stick a M30 in the moggy minor over the road while you were at it.
how did you find doing the engine swap with new paint everywhere?

here's andys one fitted
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/a.law47/33 ... uring.html
they don't look like the bonnet will shut but somehow it all clears. the auto TPS (round plug) is taller and touched the bonnet on mine. also, i had to remove the plastic trim on the AFM.

Didn't find any live scampi but I did have a packet of Scampi Fries with the pic-nic!
Me and my mate next door have had many drunken conversations about that Morris Minor and what could be done with it, M30 has cropped up in conversation!
Didn't really make any difference about the paint, didn't do under the bonnet!
Ric - no worries, I believe viscous coupling is 32mm, check link!

if i can be of any help with all this (excellent) talk about turbos let me know martin. going slowly and not spending much money is definately the way forward, much more interesting than spending a fortune and bolting all the bits on!
10psi and a standard engine should make a great compromise between power and reliability
are you going to the pod meet?

Thanks very much Toby, I might take you up on that offer when the need arises!Toby_Unna wrote:DRIFTBOY wrote:

Yeah, it is kind of more fun when it's done on a shoestring!
I do intend to be at the Pod meet, although with the standard engine installed!

I love the new avatar Theo! Damn funny programme!
I've still got to fit the power steering gear, sort the snapped stud in the exhaust manifold and fit the exhaust, fit rad and bleed cooling system and fit all the ignition stuff. Should eeeeaaasily get it done on sunday!

No more overheating than usual, for some reason it was just seemed particularly bad that weekend!
I'll be interested to see if the standard engine runs any cooler! ?

Sounds like theres only a few bits and bobs to get sorted. Have you got the gear linkage on fully? I just remembered I left it hanging in place
Ha ha! I like the mouse! Especially when it did the impression of Liam Gallagher - priceless!
Yeah, no worries, I finished off the gear linkage!
I hope the weather is as good on sunday as it has been all week!

The weather was as good today as it was all week!
I was sweating buckets though!
After I drilled out the (other) broken stud in one of the exhaust manifolds it was easy getting the engine going, it started first turn of the key!

And in the traditional 335 way (even though I was simply replacing one M30 with another) with no exhaust!
I'm sure the neighbours were as impressed as i was!??
All seems good with the £150 Ebay engine and I can finally put my oil drip tray on Ebay!
The Z3 steering rack with brand new track rods and rod ends is fantastic, even without power steering connected! You only have to think about turning and it's done!
Got to get the tracking adjusted soon mind!
Now it's time to re-strip down my engine, sort out some niggles and get it ready for turbocharging!

I'm using just a single Scorpion rear silencer!
Neighbours and friends kept asking why I was changing a 3.5 engine with... another 3.5 engine!
I became like a tape recording in the end explaining my plans!

Excellent mate, pleased it all went well.. starting without an exhaust is so much fun, I was really tempted to go off my estate as it's about 200 yards then it's open national speed limit roads.. really wanted to hear the 3.5 under full load without an exhuast
I chickened out though
Do you have any under car photo's showning your exhaust system, layout ??
I've got a feeling I'll be redoing mine again tonight... first day back at work (had week off to do conversion) and realised that I know might fowl the speedbumps at my workplace

You wouldn't want to copy my exhaust anyway, it's a bit of a Mad Max style bodge to be honest!
Toby - I'll be stripping my other engine down very soon and getting busy as and when funds allow!
Theo - I'm surprised how little difference there is between the two engines. If I did it again I wouldn't bother spending the money tuning a non turbo engine!
It is good piece of mind to know that if it goes bang engines are plentiful and cheap!
I don't at the moment - I had a major pc problem last month and lost ALL my photos, files, porn - the lot!charlE30 wrote:
