mine has been off the road due to personal probs too. the specific personal problem being: my thumb getting stuck up my arse and not sorting the car out earlier!

Hi,
Looking good! Bet you cant wait to fire it up
Just in the throes of putting my m30 in!
(weather has not been kind to those without a garage)
Using auto 735i engine 1990
e30.de mounts p3
324td fan and clutch (anyone fitted one with pics showing clearance?)
e28 535 manual rad
e28 gbox
e28 flywheel and clutch (525)
m3 prop
m3 exhaust
m3 lsd
Why will the auto ecu not work?
Also there seems to be two pipes, a fuel feed and return on the m30 lump - is there on my 318? (not looked yet- not enough time and too much rain!)
Hoping to get a lot more done in the next few days
All advice / help gratefully received!

Hi mate, the auto ECU might well work as I've just read a thread about doing an auto to manual conversion (M20) and it was stated that you could still use the auto ECUBaurluvva wrote:Why will the auto ecu not work?

With regards to the fuel lines, you will have a feed and return on the passengers side chassis rail, just follow the lines from your original engine if it's still in place.
Good luck dude, have you started a thread about your conversion yet? we're going to want piccys

Well I had it running yesterday
got a few issuse to iron out before I drive it, but it will hopefully make it's maiden voyage later on today.
1. Centre exhaust box making some wierd noises, like it's blowing badly but there's nothing visable.. most probably put my 325 Scorpion back on for now although I wanted a quiet subtle car.
2. Idle is far to high, approx 1100-1200 rpm and dosen't drop when it reaches temperature, any ideas anyone?? blue temp sensor maybe??
3. Bleed the coolant system properly, should be fun...
4. Get heaters and windows working
this one has got me confused as I connected pin 15 on the C101 (E30 body side) plug to the smallest nut on the starter motor and they both worked, now for some reason they don't and all fuses are good. Can anyone confirm weather pin 15 needs to connect to the E34 engine loom in the C101 or is it just cut?!?!?
Anyway getting excited about the first drive....

I've sorted the idle problem... changed the ICV for the new one of my old M20 and it's cured it, it nows sits at a steady 700-800rpm but wierdly my heater and windows now work also

oh how we love the gremlins
so does it run have you had a drive?
Gall is comming round mine tonight to make the engine mounts
still its seems there is plenty to do
exhaust sounds a pain thats why Gall is helping me with a full 3inch system
only one back box
i may get hold of a centre box when i can afford it but untill then it may have to be slightly load......
as for washer i will do what gareth did and just hunt one out? or big bottle and cone filter? just for a bit to hear the noise?
wish i was as close as you

The little gremlins must have gone on holiday or something as it's not happened again since.
Well I've just been around my estate (in the car obvisouly) and I love it
The clutch is nice and light, the gearshift is amazing with the B&M shifter, temperature sits inbetween 1/4 and 1/2 and blows lovely hot air. The difference in overall drive though feels really really good, I can feel some slight vibration through the pedal box though which I suspect is the exhuast which will get sorted when I swop it over to my scorpion. Not the best solution as it's from a 325 but it'll do for now until I can afford to get the correct type of system. I was thinking straight through pipes into an E36 328 sport back box like Toby used to have.
Anyway I'm off to refit the bonnet and go for a proper drive

Charlie, we want vids/pics of the beasty !
Charlie
i bet your out right now in the beast so i dont expect you will be back on the comp until the petrol runs out. see you in 5 then.
joke.
i cant believe you were so excited to drive it that you drove it round the estate with no bonnet!
was that just so you could look down at the big 6 3.5 m30 and smile at your accomplishment!
thats a statement not a question.
good man! i am very happy for ya

Just got back from a trip around town, not cruising (not my cup a tea) just seeing how it fairs up in traffic, crawling along, hill starts etc just to build my confidence in the engine/gearbox/clutch etc
I was sooooo impressed it handled everything much better than the old M20 and stayed cooler to
I'm going to pop out again (any excuse) get some fuel and take it out into the country.
I'm afraid the car dosen't look as nice as the piccys above as it's now got an old black bonnet on, no interior and is missing the hub caps of the pina rep's.. looks quite purposeful though. I haven't refitted the proper bonnet as I want to check clearances whilst driving and don't really care if this scrap bonnet gets the odd dink.
I'm looking at selling the 17's to buy some new rubber for my 15 BBS which I'm going to refurb black with a silver or polished lip.. will set the car off quite nicely (with the red bonnet back on).
My missus is happy it's finished (apart from a little tinkering) as she can now have the house/garden/shed/driveway back.
Later dudes

Nice, sounds pretty sorted for the first drive
yeah!
and i like the idea of a black bonnet! i really want one for mine but in matt black. only real reason is i want to add some bonnet cooling and it may call for a respray?
just to warn you the black bbs can make the wheels look much smaller! esspecially going for 17s to 15s then the black centre.
enjoy the drive please tell us about the country drive when you get back.
lucky bugger enjoy all that hard work.

Felt pretty sorted aswell mateAndy335Touring wrote:Nice, sounds pretty sorted for the first drive
It's really difficult to stick to speed limits now (out of town I may add) as you just don't want to take your foot of the accelerator, it hits 60 surprisingly quick maybe something to do with running a 3.91 LSD. The actual feel of the car is transformed aswell, it sticks to the road like glue and the steering feels great...
I AM SOOOOOOO HAPPY WITH IT
I am going to be spraying the bonnet at some point in true monkey style matt black and the one of the reasons behind going back to 15's is the difference in the way the car drives. When I first put on the 17's it felt sluggish due to the extra rolling weight.. BK's make 15" BBS feel like lightweight race wheels.
Future plans will include MS with wasted spark and maybe a supercharger.. just to be different.
I'm going to wash the car today so will take some piccys
God I don't half go on and on and on
Charlie
P.S I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for the encouragement, advice etc without you guys this project would never have happened.. and a big thanks to you Andy I'll never forget that time when I came up to collect a flywheel and you took me out for a quick drive in your 335.. yours was one of the first and was the inspiration for me (and many other I'd imagine)

result!
worth all of the hard work isn't it!!!!
what have you done by way of a air filter? i've still got the massive E32/4 airbox which fits very snugly in the space. i might get an uprated panel filter for it maybe. the bonus is tat with a short bit of rubber hose on the inlet of it and some trimming of the headlight back trim thingy, you have a perfect cold air feed for free

I'm quite sure if he's using an E34 engine and your using an E28 engine the measurements will be different as I think the mount holes are in a slightly different placewhipsey wrote:any chance you can take some measurements i've still got to make mineric325i wrote:

Gareth, yep I'm using the standard airbox and yep definetly worth the hard work. I need to try and find my headlamp surround plasticy trim thing, I've got one some where from an M10 316 which had the required hole and tubing as it was a carb engine with the airfeed coming in on the drivers side..

it didnt work out right last night we had a few issues. the engine seems to look wrong? it doesnt lay flat? and it seems to be too close to teh steering rack?
so we didnt make them last night, it looks like monday if andy is free?
we tried to start it....but nothing.
it turned over but didnt fire. think it may have been an earth problem?
also teh e34 coil is strange but there is spark.
grrr.
still maybe the engine should be mounted before we start it.
sorry to take over. double post time

charlie i can tell your happy! enjoy the big 6.
glad you gone for the bbs i prefer them but they do look really small next to the alpina reps.
matt black bonnet with black bbs - its like you read my mind! are you adding some bonnet cooling holes?
i have the black bbs and the bonnet could be black if i add a vent?
really happy its running and going so well

Brilliant work Charlie, I'm really jealous
I've spent all day starting (but not finishing
) daft jobs on mine, now it's stranded on the drive with no front brakes and the interior all taken apart. and it's a lovely day and i can't drive it
well done mate. will you be making it to the Pod meet in september?

Just lots of silly jobs really! Fitting some Audi aux gauges for example (i really needed some idea of oil temp/press!), which meant moving the megasquirt and its relays etc away from the centre console to the under dash area, which was a bit of a pain. also still messing about with these 750i brakes, haven't got mount brackets made for the calipers yet so I've just been tidying them up. to be honest it's put of MOT now anyway so i might as well get all these bits done before I take it for one, while the weather holds up. No garage
there's going to be plenty of 335 action at santa pod mate. you me and Andy can go in convoy?! (if you two can keep up

haven't done too much rigging up yet unfortunately Theo, not had the most productive of days!

Cheers for putting those pics up, I've also got some Audi guages, but not with the right pressure sender or the wiring like yours do, probably worth getting another complete set from a scrappers in my case. I've got a radio blanking plate and three 52mm guages fit in there perfectly, but thats the easy bit! That adapter that Buster has used looks similar to the one in the link below, is it the right thread?

Theo that is the same as an m20 thread, but unsure of an m30. In fact for £10 that would save a lot of buggering about I can assure you! Realoem should tell you the thread and pitch of an m30 I think.
