Depends on each individal car really, but at a guess 125mph wouldn't be unrealistic

i've had an indicated 130mph outta the 320 touring, so prob 120-130mph is possible, with a 4.10 diff (and better aerodynamics than the saloon
)
top end speed can be increased by putting a longer diff (lower numbered)on, but accelleration suffers....

it leaves the air behind it in a more efficient manner than a saloon would....Zayyan wrote:How does the touring have better aerodynamics!?

cos i say itZayyan wrote:How does the touring have better aerodynamics!?
no, its all to do with the fact that there is less varience in airflow (over the roof) on the touring as its all one level, instead of dipping back down for the boot.
that was one of the reasons that volvo used to run estates in the BTCC..basically the estate
1. Had better aerodynamics
2. Had better weight distribution
3. Had better torsional rigidity, as the forces were transferred more evenly through the body (esp as forces at the rear were BEHIND the rear wheels)

Cheers Neil & Karan, wouldn't've thought of that answer....was actually expecting a smart
answer like "it's got M Tec suspension as standard so it's lower and less air gets under the car meaning less resistance"!

Id love to see the "real" top speeds of E30s, i think magazine road tests could only get a "real" 136mph or so out of a 325i Sport, my 318iS told me it was doing 135 at the limiter in 5th, im guessing it was high 120s.
The M3 with its aerodynamic kit only does about 140mph anyway!
Ive seen 140/145 on the speedo in this but in reality its probably about 135mph, ahem. Oh and I have a VERY long driveway before anyone ask....

I thought the M3 was geared for best acceleration between 50 and 115mph though, as top speed's not too important?6potWil6pot wrote:The M3 with its aerodynamic kit only does about 140mph anyway!

Coefficients of drag seem to favor long and angular things (like estate cars).Zayyan wrote:How does the touring have better aerodynamics!?
For example, the Volvo 7series estate (Squarest of them all) has a lower CD than a Porsche 928!

Hyperthetically speaking, I had 144 on the clock of my "is" at about 6500 rpm with 700 to go ... lol now i have no idea what that really is due to inacuracies in speedo and larger than standard wheels ....
Mind you i got to that speed over a 8 mile stretch :p hehe you gotta love the A130 (daryll will know what i mean!!)
Wish i had a tail wind too

FWIW, the handbook says:
320i - top speed 122mph; 0-62 in 10.2 sec
325i - top speed 135mph; 0-62 in 8.3 sec
Figures for pre facelift models with manual 'box.

There was a thread by cros where he calibrated the speedo by himself, and found that when it displayed 60mph the car was only doing 53.....I guess it must vary from car to car though....A1BMW325iSport wrote:well the speedo on mine showed 122, how accurate are the speedo`s thats the question

just out of interest, i thought a raindrop shape was one of the most effecient shapes to move through the air?
would this mean that a touring is more effecient in reverse?

AAhhh... so there are large discrepancies with speedo reading then? Because one of th 318i that i have was showing 140mph (albeit on a very long long downhill straight) But i take it it could have been going a lot lot less? A rover 1.4 can get 110mph along the same straight.

No, you're thinking of an early '90s Corolla. They were more aerodynamically efficient in reverse!bennyp wrote:just out of interest, i thought a raindrop shape was one of the most effecient shapes to move through the air?

surely it's good for more than that. I had an indicated 126 on the flat. 130 on a slight downhill.Andy325i wrote:Damn! it was called a Quartic steering wheel in their sales information, apparently gave a lot more feel ( an excuse to say "sorry badly designed cos with a round steering wheel you cant see the clocks")davetouring wrote:Lovely car.

My dad had an Allegro!
It was brown....

Hannah, the 318i you got to 140, you sure it wasn't an iS in disguise?
Your speedo's probably a little bit out on that one!
