Hi,Been keeping an eye on what your doing keep up the good work.As you know Roy's doing the same with the B6,you said early in the thread about the green stikcker Roy was able to get one from his mate who works at the dealers but that was for the B6 so I'll get him to ask if he can get one for yours. Here's a pic of it think he paid about £5 or so for it.

i had to get up to go and look at a job! I need to keep the privates going to fund this bloody car!

I've been to bmw this week and got some prices as a bit of food for thought!

brand new from the dealers at list price........hold on

fuel tank - £377+vat - my tank is dented but not rusty, leaking so not sure about what to do on this one
filler neck -£125+vat - i might powder coat my one as it's only got some small surface rust
doors -£325+vat - both doors have some small bits of rust on them, drivers is worse
bootlid -£279+vat - bootlid is well gone on mine, i have another but it's got a tiny but of rust on it
front valance £160+vat - mines not too bad and is never seen because the cow catcher covers it, so i could de rust the small bits on it i suppose.
Wings £165 - both on mine are shot at the bottom , i have 2 second hand ones which are very good but not 100% rust free
sunroof £135 you guessed it mine is shot!
Bonnet - i didn't get a price for one, mine is pretty dam good

So i need to think a bit about what to do on the panel side of things. It's going a bit slow at the moment as i am waiting for the welding folks to get their thumb out, my neighbour works on carribean time, as does my uncle who is a tasty welder. He's only 4 miles away from me and i have found a car trailer, so i think i'd like him to have it as it would get done quicker.

I've found 3 painters through various contacts all fairly local to me with good reps, so i need to get them all out for a quote also! They all paint bentleys, astons and the like so should make decent jobs of it...i hope!

The list price for a brand new 2 door sunroof shell is only £1019 + vat for the bare shell, i don't think thats too bad a price? but they are NLA, but i'm sure there must be some lurking!

New shells are NLA as Simon said! This means NO LONGER AVAILABLE!!! Si, might possibly be one lurking as you say, but I think BMW sold the last one in the late 90's.

Si.

I always think a Money no object resto is stretching things a bit. All very good on a 30's derby Bentley old boy but.......

If I were in your position I would concentrate the majority of funds on panels and paint. It's the bit that will really say "this car has been done properly using quality parts". It would be so easy at this point when you have a garage full of sh*t thinking "i'll need a new fuel tank and neck" when all of a sudden your £500+ the vat lighter when theres welding to be done.

Therefore i'd say genuine wings are worth the dough all day long. They all rot eventually so why bother prepping and painting even a slightly rusty panel at the risk of it coming back Same goes for doors and bootlids? there are thousands of rust free second hand panels out there. I'd source 2nd hand for these but source perfectly straight original panels to save on too much skimming and prep work. You will probably lose the windey windows at the same time. Sunroof is a no brainer, ask barry? Good valances come up on here occasionally and they seem about the £20 so not worth worrying about too much.

Tank? I wouldn't put a dented one back but I would put a refinished straight 2nd hand tank in. Do they rot out? don't thnk it's a common problem but at that price new and being out of site, a refinished 2nd hand straight one makes some sense.

Filler neck. 'kin 'ell, 125+vat seems choppy. Powder coat the old one.

As for the shell, if you can source a new shell go for it. Talk about peice of mind as far as rust goes. However with reference to a recent post of yours, pop off to your haystack and search for ya needle mate!

Serious note, I'd love to see this car in the flesh. Any chance of popping over to see it some time? I'll bring some cans if your lucky.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I've always been budgeting for 2 new wings and a sunroof, my front valance is easily sortable, plus if you get a new one you have to drill holes in it for the alpina front spoiler to fit.

maybe a bootlid and door (drivers)

I'm not going to buy a shell! it doesn't need a bags worth of welding. it would be nice but it would lose the alpinaness and the shell isn't that bad that it warrants it.

I'll get some pic's of all the rust for you all to have a gander tomorrow if it stays dry enough to get it out the garage. Mr B you can come over whenever you want!

I need to borrow an engine crane if anyone has one?! it's the last thing i want out of the car is the engine+box

Thats a good point.

When you could still source a new shell, did BMW stamp it with your chassis number or did it come with a new one that showed it was a "reshell?". i think I've read somewhere that when you put a new scuttle in an M3, the chassis number is stamped in a different position? just out of interest.

New scuttles from BMW UK are total rubbish, I have read on the US forums that they don't have the same problem, so why BMW can't use the same machine as them I really don't know!

When you buy a scuttle from bmw the chassis number is stamped on the flat surface not the vertical one. The guy who was selling the totaly rotten blue c2 i looked in feb had a replacement to go with the car. As for a reshell why would it loose its alpinaness? What if the car was involved in a big accident when it was six months old and was reshelled buy bmw?

mine wasnt too bad, the main numbers nice and staight. its the numbers further along which are bit out of line. i would put a picture up but it would give away the colour i'm painting the car

in reffernce to something B7 said, you could go and get a clean shell and keep the origial ID, buy the new scuttle from BMW's for the original shell and fit it that way you keep yous cars ariginal ID

not the best solutiuon as it kind of makes it a ringer LoL
