The engine on my new purchase 318iS has a fine coating of oil all over it, no drips in the driveway, but I want to find the root cause and get fixed. What are the usual culprits in the M42 engine that I should check/get replaced?

Thanks,
Kevin.

Thanks Andrew. The car needs a new rad, so I guess it would be appropriate to get this seal done at the same time?

Yeah that would be a good idea as you will need to take the thermostat out.

Yes it is the same one

Don't forget to get new timing cover gaskets and a new crank bolt.

Just done my timing chains and to get the crank bolt loose (244ftlbs) I bought a spare botom pulley from a breakers and welded a length of steel tube to it which rests on the chassis rail to prevent the engine turning
