Strange noise

Hi all i have a question... I am the proud owner of a 91 318i cab, for the last 2 months there has been a loud knocking from the engine i took it to a garage and they said it was normal for a bmw.(i dont believe him) does anybody have an idea what this may be, a mate said it may be tappets or something, also any ideas how can i sort this out as it is quite anoying

A knocking or tapping? Knocking noises from the engine aren't good..

they all tap like a bitch! but knocking would have me worried!

yeah that was me mate bas@ard thing stoped for a little while but started again, going for an oil service next week hopefully that will stop it if not then im shafted and its gonna be a engine change maybe a 2.5 or 2.7 pending on cost dont want to do it unless i have to though as there are other things that need attention first,

Does it make the noise when in motion or all the time?
Does it change with engine speed, or wheel speed?

Maybe you could record the noise and post it for us to listen to.

its pretty much all the time, sometimes louder than others
