Hi all.

Bit of a random one here. I have the 1.8 carburettor M10 engine. Is it possible to convert the engine to run FI with bits from the injection M10? Ie, the head/intake manifold ect?

Will the head fit the existing block? Am I right thinking that the injectors are in the manifold and therfore I would possibly only need the manifold?

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Much MUCH easier to go and get a proper 318i!!!! It can be done but it just won't be cost effective and the insurance companies will be funnier about it than if you just wanted to insure a 318i.

No mate on the 318i the injectors are in the head also the valves are bigger so you'd need the 318i head aswell.

I dont think it'd be worth puttin injection on. if ur after abit more power i'd look into a bigger carb(s)

Cheers everyone. It seems as, I expected, more trouble than its worth!

Im just in the process of changing the head gasket in oder to get in through the MOT. While I had the head off it just prompted me to ask a few questions on whats do-able.

Jos: Afraid not mate, I'm in Yorkshire. Thank you anyway.

Si316: Seen it on a few of your posts and was wondering ,what is the engine on the stand in your picture?

Ta.

just get the m10 with huge 40 or 45 webbers on it!

carb is sometimes better for getting usable increases in power-esp in an 'old tech' engine like the m10...

also sounds amazing

iirc the engine in si316's sig pic is a 2litre m10 with more mods than you could shake a stick at :D

Yea, I've read a few threads that mention what you can get out of the M10's with big carbs on.

The 2 Litre M10 in Si316's picture, is that carb or FI? Presuming its all running about now, what sort of power does it put out?

Its gonna be running twin dellorto 40's ive got a 318i head on it tho thats had all sorts of porting work done on it and the injector holes blocked up. I have no idea what kind of power it will be running but people in the know are telling me anywere between 150-200bhp. Its not running yet but it should be soon, just sorting out a new exhaust manifold and mappable ignition at the mo

Wow, sounds a beast Si, how much have you spent on it so far?

Im looking to beef my M10 up for more power and avoid putting a new engine in (like the idea of keeping it original - sort of!).

Apart from the webbers, a cam and lightened flywheel, what should I do to begin with?

I stopped keeping track of how much ive spent as the number was gettin pretty big lol. it started off as a simple engine change

It depends how far you want to go with the engine as to what to do first. If you want to do a full rebuild and ballance the bottom end like me then you need to take the engine out and strip it down.
If you want abit more power with just bolt on bits then maybe look into a different exhaust and a good tuning.

Just noticed ur in yorkshire mate, im only down in cheshire. ill have to get my finger out and get this thing done so you can come check it out at some meets!

Definitely, I've been wanting to get to one of the meetings to see some of these zone cars in the flesh.

I've had the car for over a year now (previously had an e21) but i've only just got into tinkering with it. Trying to decide which direction to go with the car really, going to meet should give me an idea or two.

Looks like alot of people just go for 325 engines for their power but it seems to me that the M10's have a bit more potential than is realised. And its a bit different - I'm a fan of your work! When do you recon it'll be unleashed on the open road?

Im not sure when the car will be rolling again, its in a million and 1 bits in the garage right now. Im hoping to have it ready for the big show at brooklands on the 10th of july but im not too sure now.

Hello.

Finally got my engine back togther and running again. Just got MOT to get through now. This brings me to my next hurdle. Some, maybe most of the exhaust system need replacing in order to get through. Simple question, with performance mods in mind for the future, do I go stainless or not?

Anyone know about prices and suppliers etc.

Cheers.
