right, after deciding wich way to go on a conversion, i have bought a load of stuff to build a turbo conversion.
couple of questions...
do you think a side exit strait through exhaust 2.5" with no muffler be too loud, bearing in mind we have no emmision laws or mot in guernsey,
also
how much boost can can i push through it with out welding the water jackets on the head as my local welder doesnt want to weld them as he doesnt want to risk warping it,
and what intercooler would be best to use for around 15 psi??
cheers

the exhaust sounds spot on
depends how many long journeys you will do could do your head in but will be fun i would proberly stick a one silencer on it,
not sure about the head some will know, but the volvo 740 intercooler is my choice and very cheap 2nd hand

How big is your turbo? How much power are you goinf for?rossle wrote:right, after deciding wich way to go on a conversion, i have bought a load of stuff to build a turbo conversion.

( This will help determine exhaust diameter)
I run a single box system, the box is half the size of the stock middle box and the note isn't too loud, gets boomy from 2k-3k but is quiet before and sounds pure aggresive at full chat.....must get a vid.....
Side exhausts work and you would avoid having to go under the rear beam, which is an issue for lowered cars.
Welding the head is needed for over 1bar regular, purely to add extra clamping force. My local machine shop didn't bat and eyelid at the prospect of welding my head, so don't be put off!
Just make sure you use non-stretch head bolts and torque them to atleast 60ftlb's.
Intercoolers are personal choices really, the design is key, you want a free flowing large IC as intake temps become a major factor once the boost levels rise, more boost, more heat.
Try and route your charge pipes to be as short as poss and ensure your air filter gets a good cold feed from outside.
Ow and get MS

well only thing i need now really is the turbo, goin for hx35 but with a 14cm or 16cm for faster spool as our roads are tiny! power wise i want to be able to out pull an e46 m3, i want to go either two ways with the exhaust, no box with side exit, or out the back with a small box, dunno if i could fit a small box on the side exit? intercooler wise will this be ok fo 15psi and upwards?

I've outdragged a e46 m3, easy meat mate
HX35 or HX30 would be ideal then, I use a 18cm3 housing and get full boost @ 3.3k although I can get a few psi from 2.5k in 4th and 5th. That is mostly due to the size of the exhaust and the manifold design, having used a stock exhaust with a custom downpipe prior I can assure you that the exhaust makes a HUGE difference with turbo's.
I use a H1C which is the bigger later version, however I didn't have the choice, it was too good a bargain to not try.
You can fit a small box under the sill, you need to chop out a whole and weld in a section to create the gap, Dan, someone who's not been about much latley has done this but he's never run it to know what it sounds like.
That IC looks quite good, Ant @ A-tech has been supplying IC's for a few of his conversions and the one Chris P had fitted works really well. I'm gonna try get one like that ebay one but twice as tall and hopefully thicker as I know I have to reduce my intake temps now.
Have you sorted the management side as yet?
HTH, Mark.

yeah, i bought midnights full ms,02, 2.5 downpipe, manifold, head with turbo cam, all i need is turbo and intercooler, when do you think i could get full boost with a 14 cm or 16cm housing? and when do you think it would back off as i want to keep full boost till red line, should i go with an intercooler a touch bigger then?

I would imagine it will be less rpms but I have no proof of that, it would be easier to work out if we had another housing size and user to compare.rossle wrote:yeah, i bought midnights full ms,02, 2.5 downpipe, manifold, head with turbo cam, all i need is turbo and intercooler, when do you think i could get full boost with a 14 cm or 16cm housing? and when do you think it would back off as i want to keep full boost till red line, should i go with an intercooler a touch bigger then?
Maybe you should ask that question on e30tech or PPF as there are more holset users there.
Re backing off, well that only happens when the wheels are too small to either get rid of the gas or create the pressure needed at the required volume. So aslong as you stay over say 60mm compressor and 50/60mm turbine it should hold full boost till way beyond our redlines.
My wheels are 50/82 and 67/63 mm which is big but not too big.
Ants got loads on info on the Hoslets and a supplier of them too, they're no where near as expensive as the equivelant garret and they last much longer too, so they tell me.
I've had no issues with mine other than it's size and would recommend one to anyone, the noise it makes is worth the money on it's own, just imagine a turbine engine running under your bonnet, the noise is awesome.
So you have MS, head, cam, manifold. Did you get injectors?
Also whats your plan for the head gasket and head bolts?

i got 440cc injectors, non stretch bolts, and getting an mls gasket a little thicker to lower the comp abit too, its a low comp motor any way but what the hell eh!
its just the turbo and intercooler im stuck on, i want full boost by around 2500, maybe a little later but i want it to hold that till red line, im lookin for around 300, 350hp?
while the engine is out im treating her to new rings and m50 shells and arp rod bolts and a new clutch of course!!
im lookin forward to hearin the turbo boost up, thats why i wanted a side exit with no baffles just straight through!!! FLAMES.... but with no emmision laws an no mot in guernsey i should be able to get away with it as long as it doesnt kill old people with the noise!!!!

Ahh, I remember Kevin buying them now, cool.
Dimmy went with a custom T3 with a bigger compressor and .63 a/r hotside with a few tricks too and that would suit your needs but I do remember he paid nearly a bag for it, which is a lot of money.
Just buy as big a IC as you can fit, the volvo ones are huge and work well plus I know Ant has a spare
Toby Unna ( 335iturbo ) runs the volvo IC with no issues.
Where are you getting your MLS from? MLS or cometic are based in Colchester but they have a 6 to 8 week lead time plus they aint cheap!
Another thing, Ant bought a HX27 a while back for a trial but it's not been used, I'd be interested to know the wheel sizes on that as they all run high levels of boost so it may be just the ticket.
The only thing about turbo's is like everything they have limits, you can't have everything, i.e huge torque and boost at low revs and no top end or the opposite, I've ended up with a laggy bitch BUT if you drive it right and use the gears you can get the boost up at any speed, just takes time to learn what it likes and doesn't like.
My clutch doesn't like my turbo, I've found that out recently
I guess it's about time you start the "build diary" thread and show us all how your getting on!

i will be doing that mate, but just collecting most of the parts, got new inner wings to fit, 280 brakes from keri, new shocks, new bushes, h&r anti roll bars, blah blah blah, got loads to get on with, must have spent about 3 bags so far, thinkin about it now i need to get off my arse an get it started!!! my biggest hurdle is the turbo, cos i want redline boost but i want it early too, so not sure to go for a 14cm or 16 cm, been on e30tech and they have all sorts of different answers that aint much help to me to be honest....
about the volvo intercoolers i heard they dont do that well under much boost? if they do there is a nice little number on ebay that il have!!!!
re: mls, il prob get it through ant as he knows his stuff an knows what i need..

he he
Sounds like your starting off on the journey I'm just finishing!
This was only supposed to be a chip, BBTB and exhaust swap!!
TBH 14/16 either will be fine, 18 is big and 10 too small, if you want the quicker to spool get the 14 and buy a 16 housing for a rainy day, they're real easy to swap over, 4 bolts and the v-band exhaust clamp.
I've not used the volvo IC so I can't say, best ask Ant and Toby really, not sure if Dimmy has one too.
Ants the man, he started project with me and has helped me the whole way, your in good hands.
Mark.

would a 12cm housing be too small to hold boost to redline?
