If the car is pre-93, then you don't need a cat no. Mine have never had cats, e34 or e28 engine neither of them. Might explain my slight rich running but generally was sweet.

If I was to rebuild one I would go for a cam and total seal piston rings.
Was about to post this up also.

And from what i understand his was a 'good' (it came from jonb  ) engine?

Is that a 3.2 or a 3.5? Is there a way of finding out which model of car the engine was out of from the engine number?

Cheers,

They're supposedly good for the life of the engine. I'd try and lift it off the sprockets; any appreciable lift in the mid-section of the cog would indicate wear.

I wouldn't waste time and money on bigger injectors unless you plan 250+ bhp.

As said, try and 'lift up' the timing chain to check for wear.
If it is worn replace the sprockets, guide rail and tensioner as well.

Martin.

Is it OK to use the hex-head head bolts on M30 engines (as pictured above), or should they be converted to Torx type?

It made 199bhp with what I later found to be a fcuked rotor arm and distributor cap, and a badly blowing exhaust. I was fairly happy, although it was sods law it didn't make that extra pony and reach the 200 mark. It did manage 222ft/lb of torque which feels good in a stripped out e30.

You could have made a few more bhp with those faults fixed i guess, like you say it's sods law the faults didn't come to light til afterwards.

I'm glad i've ditched the dizzy cap/rotor arm on mine

Why would you need to do that? Where would your dipstick be then?

Not sure about the dip stick but you do need the sump and the oil pump from an E34/2 M30 according to E30.de, not many E28 M30 powered 335's about ?

BTW, i've got a spare sump and pump if you struggle to find one.

M30B34 out of E28 has 10:1 CR and 218hp. No lambda, no cats.
M30B34/B35 out of E34 has 9:1 CR, cats, lambda, bigger inlet-valves and makes 211hp.

E28 had also M30B34 with cats, and different motronic-map, produced 184hp.

You need oilpan & -sump from E34, it has smaller "bulge" than E28 version. Just change the oilstick to one from M30 out of E34 and it's fine.

Is there a way of differentiating a 218bhp M30B34 from a 211bhp M30B35 eg, from the engine number?

Not sure about the engine numbers but there are some external differences like the b34 having two support straps from the rocker cover to the inlet manifold, the b34 inlet ports are sort of a rounded off square and the b35 are kindney shaped.

Not sure it's that simple tbh as the pistons have a different crown shape so i'm not sure the squish areas will match up ??

"lata" = "later" ?

M30B34 with and without cats were produced on the same time so there are no newer and older models (e28). Fitting E34 head to E28 block would maybe make some difference but basically it doesn't make sense.

They are probobly just in the inlet manifold i'd have thought ?

Find a place that does injector cleaning and/or a Bosch specialist as they will sell you some new caps for pennies.
