E30 Performance Air filters
Moderator: martauto
Im thinking of either mounting a new cone filter or changing the existing filter in the box.
Do they make any difference?. Pipercross, K&N, BMC etc..
Whats the script, is it a total waste of money.
I believe some people even drill holes in there airboxes?.
Cheers Gareth.

Drilling holes in the airbox won't improve flow but will give you a nice induction noise.
This has been discussed time and time again all the evidence suggests the stock filter houseing on E30's are better than cone type filters due to the snorkel.
However changing the filter in the stock box for a K&N or ITG (zone shop), is proven to be better than a OEM paper replacement filter.
All a cone type filter will do is at best be equal on power (but tests prove this isn't the case, they are usually down on power) and sound nice. If your not worried about the noise go for a quality replacement panel filter that fits in your stock filter housing which will improve your cars breathing but won't make it sound any faster.

I say get a replacement panel filter they work best with BMW Engines.
Tried a Cone filter on my 535i and a panel filter.
Intake charge temperature was a lot lower with the panel filter and it it gave the car a 2hp increase over the cone filter

Testing of this will start in the next two weeks.
We will be asking for a volunteer with a nice standard 325i to come forward for the testing.

i can vouch for the panel filter swap, but you really need an extra air feed into the bottom of the airbox thats fed from the front, i did this on an old pre facelift 320i some time ago and it really did make a differance once moving and air was being forced into the airbox, i have a 325i now with a K&N cone on it but ive just got a panel filter (K&N) off ebay as im going back to the std setup when i can get hold of an airbox as i believe it will be a lot better, when the car is hot the alternator is throwing red hot air straight onto the cone filter which isnt good at all could shield it but whats the point when its tried and tested that the std setup is more than adequate..

Thanks for the order. Didn't realise it was you!
We did a similar test on the E30 M3 and got a positive result vs standard brand new BMW filter.
Could try on a 318iS if you can come down some time.

What's wrong with Powerflow? Was thinking i'd buy one for my iS from Spadged6dph wrote:New exhaust too Ant, No more of the powerflow wrongness

I bought the ITG filter from Sal a while ago and was very pleased with the results, especially top end. To make sure I wasn't imagining things I refitted the original airbox a couple of month in for comparison purposes and the performance was noticeably reduced.
A few months ago I bought a new main car and promptly removed the ITG Maxogen kit that was fitted to my old car before it went. After a bit of tinkering I found that the filter from my Maxogen kit was the same size as the filter used on the BMW and to cut a long story short I managed to fit the complete Maxogen kit onto the BMW.

I'm really pleased with the result as there's again a noticable willingness to rev in the top end. I also have Ant's chip and a BBTB. The only problem is cost, as the filter and housing are around £320... But as I say I took it from my old car so that wasn't really an issue.

Bought: Obtain in exchange for payment. Brought: Come to a place with (someone or something).
These words are NOT interchangable....!

My powerflow was very badly made, It is very much dependant on where you have it made tbh.dodgem wrote:What's wrong with Powerflow? Was thinking i'd buy one for my iS from Spadged6dph wrote:New exhaust too Ant, No more of the powerflow wrongness
I think I have seen pics of the exhaust Spadge is selling, and it looks good.

Will you be testing the BMC CDA? I am interested in the results!!!M5pilot wrote:Testing of this will start in the next two weeks.
