Why would the valve timing be out?
Do you know anything about the engines previous runnings?
I would put some wire down the plug hole of No1 just to make sure the piston is at the top of its stroke, if the crank is at TDC I cant help but think the valves are hitting a piston with the cams where they are. You should be able to see if the cams have been moved by looking at the sprockets, look for clean parts where they have been turned round.
Fingers crossed for you mate

I put a bit of hard flex down the bore and rocked it gently in fourth gear until it was at near enough TDC. The result is there in the pics.Jhonno wrote:Hmmmm.. Mine looks a bit diff..

I'm sure the second pic shows the DC mark on the inlet cam sprocket too. I can't see any reference on the exhaust cam sprocket.
What are you going to do next?

not sue atm.. I think the best option is to sowt the bwake sewvo, and get the bwakes sowted, finish the e36 wack swap, (long stowy with the coupling) then when i have my manifold and x-pipe, take to bmw on a sat n get them to check the engine ova and time it pwopely

Jhonno, if you still dont have a wad in its easy enough to turn the engine by hand, you ought to get the cwank at TDC and check the cams again before laying out any more money!

I have a wad.. My pic was TDC.. Cams ae well off! Not in welation to each otha, but out of time with the cwank. Odd. Its tuwns ova atm, but wont catch, doesnt sound like its twying eitha. Has spak and fuel and compwession. Odd pop of flame fwom the inlet also suggests timing

Are your plugs getting wet ?
Have you tried a multimeter to check you've got power to the coils/fuel injectors ?

If both cams are timed right in relation to each other and it is genuinely at TDC then presumably the timing chain or sprocket has slipped at the crank? In the pic above they look like they're a full 180 crank deg out compared to the manual and Oldschool2002's pics!

^^ Good luck with doing all that in that amount of time. It's all the little jobs that bite you in the ass.
I find making lists helps me to stay focused and keeps me motivated when I cross things off it one by one. Sad, but true. I figure that owning an E30 is a never ending list of little jobs. I suppose that's a good thing otherwise I would lose interest if it were truly 'finished'.
Once that engine fires up you will have a renewed enthusiasm towards it and everything will fall into place. It's funny that all the hard work pays off the instant that happens

I do exactly the same mate.I've got little lists all over the place. When i think of something that needs doing i put it on paper. Then when i get around to doing the jobs its great satisfaction to stick a line through it .old_skool_2002 wrote:^^ Good luck with doing all that in that amount of time. I do exactly the same too.
I find the list doesn't get shorter though - every time I do a job and cross something off the list, the job almost always unearths other things that need doing, and they get added to the bottom of the list.

Jhonno, got these brake plates being organised, the full set with the (previously unpublished) bit required for the internal mod. You up for a set?
