Will the oil filter housing with the ports for an oil cooler from an M30 engined E28 fit the M30 block from an E34? As long as the oil cooler isn't huge, it can't be too hard to fit to the E30, or is it!?

you can fit the lot easily, even the original pipes fit although not very neatly.
you need to plug a hole in the block however. there's a drain to sump tapping behind the oil filter housing on the e34 block that the e28 one doesn't have. you just need some 10mm threaded rod, of quite fine pitch, to block it. if you don't you get little or zero oil pressure
straight swap other than that.

Thanks Toby, that's really helpful. Now I just need to find a crusty e28 being broken - shouldn't be too hard.
BTW your engine bay makes me very, very jealous!!

You can get E34/2 oil filter housings with the oil cooler take offs, don't know as theres any pros/cons using either E28 or E34 housings but the pipe fittings are different so i don't think you can mix-n-match part's(housing,pipes,cooler) ?
The early E34's didn't have them fitted, it's from 91-> i think ?

i think the e34 m5 housing might fit too, but i haven't bothered to look on realoem to check
late e34 535i might be a better bet, most m535i oil lines are getting pretty crusty by now and while they fit, they don't look too pretty!

Don't seem to see so many late e34 535i's being broken as rusting e28 shitters annoyingly enough. Will keep my eyes peeled for both.
Cheers for the advice as ever m30 heroes.
