Has anyone ever fitted an audi 2.3 8 or 16 valve into an E30?
Used to run Audi 90s I have had 3 of them!
The suspension was rubbish (always rattled even with complete new parts) but the engines are bomb proof, sound great and economical for such a large engine.
I could get 40MPG if I was real careful with my last one.
This was just a crazy idea as the engine sits the right way in the engine bay.

Are they a 5 cyl engine?Has anyone ever fitted an audi 2.3 8 or 16 valve into an E30?
I'm impressed that they managed to get either 1.6 or 3.2 valves per cylinder if they are

Main problem with the audi engines is matching a gearbox to it as they all drive the front wheels. AAN and ABY are the ones to go for (100 S4, and S2) but they're in demand and quite expensive. 10v n/a will sound nice but be slow, 20v n/a will get you into 325i power.
Volvo D5 engine has a similar block to the Audi WR engine but the petrol engines are completely different.

I quite like the idea of fitting either an S3/TT 1.8T or for frugal work car: a VAG 1.9TDi engine.
Both would require a RWD gearbox, as would the 5 pot. Are there any on the market? I beleive PPC magazine are running a feature on a Weisel (Diesel Westfield). The guy will have to source a bell housing so there might be a good place to start. You'll probably end up with a Ford gearbox but thats no hardship (depending on the required diff ratio that is).
Good luck sunshine.

Don't think so. D5 is a fairly recent design isn't it? I don't remember it being in anything older then the V70.

i was thinking of the older diesel then. definately shared with big old rwd volvos. just depends if the bellhousing pattern varies between 5cyl diesel and petrol engines.
even the 10v NA ones sound lovely, it would make a vey unusual sounding bmw!

Didn't think there were any 5 cyl RWD Volvos, or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Is it not the more modern volvo motors that are 5 cylinder? The Focus ST motor is a volvo unit I think. The wife has one of these and It sounds (and goes) great for a ford!
