just had the power steering fluid changed at a garage due to appalling laziness on my part. Forgive my ignorance, but shouldn't the fluid now be red not black as it still is? Have I been ripped off?

they're not all red then? it's maybe a slightly greeny black but looks pretty damn murky to me! or maybe it was so grimey that old dirt has contaminated new fluid?
nice motor btw

Most power steering fluids are red, its the same as ATF fluid, Automatic Tramission Fluid, but if you but in bulk and quality supplier, then yes it was green in my day, thing is without flushing out the system the old fluid red with muck, and new fluid dark green, it will turn a murky green/black.

Maybe I'll have to give them the benefit. That's what you get for being lazy I suppose! cheers Mark

If you wanna know if you got screwed dude , ring the garage and ask them what oil they used, then put a Q to the oil guru on here and ask what colour it should be , if it dont match up then i reckon u got shafted .
Iused to work for a gearbox rebuilder and all of the ATF fluid we ever used was red .
The only answer is that they did not flush the system , which i reckon they should have , so the ball is in your court dude !

Either way I'd take it back to them because it should NOT be murky no matter what colour it is.
ATF comes in 2 colours, most commonly is red and commercially some places use green.
If the job was done properly then you would be able to see nice clean fluid in the resevoir. I'd take it back and kick up a stink and get them to do a proper job. I wonder if they bled it too?
