Yup, they suffer from the same shimmy when the bushes get worn at the front. Inner and outer wings are rust traps - and outer wings are £500 a pop to replace. Also the boot suffers from rust around the rear lights when the gaskets go. Sunroof drains also get clogged. If you're after the base 635CSi with the M30 engine, check the oil spray bar bolts have been replaced (or lockwired in place). They vibrate loose, starving the camshaft of oil. Later versions had threadlock on them to stop this. The M635 engine didn't suffer this problem. Replace the high pressure fuel hose - it'll be 20 years old now, and when it fails, it tends to do so inna barbeque styleee. Rust around the footwell can also be a problem, which tends to indicate that the sills and jacking points are also knackered. Batteries fail on the SI board, which if you're lucky just means you need to strip it and solder some new ones in. Chances are though that the acid has leaked and knackered the board. Rear arches can also suffer.
Inner wings:

Footwell:

Rear arch:

Lockwired spraybar banjo bolt:

I haven't even started on the interior yet, but I'm not expecting it to be any better than what I've found so far to be honest. At least it will keep me busy for a while.

highlines come with lots of electrics and these can play up, The E24 m635 has the same motor, the guy that owned mine had it snap on him at 108,000 miles, it lunched everything in the top end and he was faced with a bill for £3500 back in 1993!
If you're gonna buy an MPower car( E28 or E24) buy one that has had the chain done, that little job alone will cost you £2500, the parts alone are £900+
But they are great cars
dint some have the twin chains though ??
nice pictures of rust there!

If you're after an M, the one things that pops into mind is something I heard on an American site: The M635CSi is a $20,000 [1] car- pay it now, or pay it later.
The 635CSi and variants can be had for a lot less, and if you're prepared to get stuck in with the welding and bodywork, you can get something useable for a lot less. But again, if you're after something show-car standard, it's probably going to be a minimum of 5K unless you get lucky. If you're even slightly interested, I'm keeping tabs on the cost of my restoration in the page linked in my .sig - if you look around though you can get something with a lot less rust and a years MOT for around a grand. Just last week an '89 highline motorsports edition went on ebay for 1100 quid just up the road from me. Someone got a good deal if it was as clean as the advert suggested.
[1] Or $25K. Can't remember now. But you get the idea...
