slight power loss

when i switch on lights or any other electrics the engine drops rev's!

is this telling me i need a new alternator or battery, maybe both?
any help on this is appreciated.

yes M40 316i 1990

The rev's do drop a bit with the m40 engine.

when i put the heater blower on full and lights on,
it's like the engine is going to stall!
surely it should drop that much!!
