jus a quickie....

when changing an ecu is it essential to swap it with the exact same one i.e one with the same ecu number?

I'd say that you'll need the same numbers other wise it just won't run right. Haven't done it myself on the E30 but on a previous car (non-BM but I'm not going to publically admit what) it was definitely the case.

This only applies to the later Motronic ECU's (facelift onwards), the basic unit's are all the same but the chip differs giving the different bosch part numbers on the case.

You can use any e30 motronic unit and fit the chip from your Ecu and it will work.
