If only... its been like the bloody monsoon season here the last week or so.
Blatants Magnificent Weekend. June 30th. Newquay. UPDATE!!!!
Moderator: martauto
Bah!!!
It was a disaster from start to finish. Saturdays drizzle turned into a cataclysmic downpour, the karting was a total waste of time (heavy downpours meant the engines kept cutting out, stading water with slick tyres and karts which were mostly absolutely shagged) everyone got soaked to the skin despite 'waterproof' karting gear, Ziggy's car broke a driveshaft, Munky lost his keys meaning a break in and steering lock breakage, I lost my phone and the campsite was full of wankers.
Newquay, the English Riviera? My arse. It's a cold wet shithole coastal town infested with chavs. Never again!!
We left at 6.30 this morning to get back to civilisation before lunchtime. Needless to say the sun is cracking the stones up here.
Respect for Nathan for organizing it, shame the bastard weather ruined it.

Reminded me of Blackpool with the amount of hen and stag parties.Andyboy wrote: Newquay, the English Riviera? My arse. It's a cold wet shithole coastal town infested with chavs. Never again!!
Yep left 6:30/7:00am got home after 280 miles at 12 midday, includes stopping for a fry up and coffee.Andyboy wrote: We left at 6.30 this morning to get back to civilisation before lunchtime. Needless to say the sun is cracking the stones up here.![]()
Oh and since when has any campsite been 16-30, they should have chucked me of for being too old.
1st kart session was rubbish, sent me out with only one engine running and then couldnt get the other one running. Second session was much better, both engines ran all the time. got some big leary slides, under the bridge and left past the pits you could really hang the ass out and hold it there on full throttle down the straight. Had a really good race with Munkey towards the end, nearly ended in tears when he spun under the bridge and we nearly went head to head

I've got your phone andy, found it in my passenger footwell when I got back.... and worryingly, a pair of your soaking wet boxers
Pm me your address and I'll send the phone to you tomorrow
The boxers are in the bin though.
Friday night was great fun, got to put a few names to faces and got drunk while eating burnt meat. What more can you ask for (apart from the f*cking rain stopping for a couple of seconds).
Saturday.... Woke up feeling like a sumo wrestler had been sleeping on my shoulders. The drive to sennen was a blowout, had an interesting pub lunch where I felt like I was about to hurl last nights beer all over everyone's lunch, my (small) burger included... Ziggy busting a diff and driveshaft and my car being used as the rescue vehicle
Karting in the p*ssing rain, in broken go karts. While they worked it was nice challenge to try and get them to turn but too much for it to be great fun. In the first session I gave up trying to race and just concentrated on getting some drifting in. Second race I had one of the aforementioned busted karts. In the lap or two that it worked me and cotty had a nice little battle, which I won
... then spun out a lap later and lost steering in one wheel, which sucked. The track and karts would be great fun in the dry, but with that much water on slicks it was impossible to do anything except understeer wildly which really ruined it.
Then followed me finding out I'd lost my F*CKING keys somewhere in the quagmire... Lots of hunting in the rain followed by andyboys criminal instincts kicking in and, gawd bless 'im, my car being started. (and bled for the first time since I've had it... no more overheating, woo!) Incidentally, I found that I do have a spare key so I dont have to replace any locks which is nice.
Was contemplating staying for the saturday night but the temptation of chinese takeaway, warmth, a bed with a naked lady in it and a hot bath was too much for me to take so I bottled it and went home. The drive homw was truly terrifying... pirelli p6000's should be banned... every single piece of standing water turned into aquaplaning hell! Almost put it into a hedge, an oncoming lorry, about three cars and the central reservation
They'll be being replaced asap! F*cking lethal.
Anyway, many thanks to nathan for organising it, it was a laugh but the weather really did p*ss on our fire as it were. Maybe later in the year a few of us could give it another shot as it could have been sooo much better without the rain. Also maybe worth finding a campsite thats not entirely populated by 16yr olds that have just finished their gcse's. I'm starting to see why the caravan club has sites that only they can use.
Was really nice to meet andy, ziggy the evil moderator and the wife, tezk and the family (respect for making it through the night with baby in tow!), tim and his mate, cotty the kart, complete with gimp suit.
V Good to see chris, nathan gordon et al again.
Many many thanks to andy for his patience with getting into my car after the key incident, was truly a pleasure to meet you chap.
Also should thank and apologise to everyone for the key incident... After that day, for you all to stand around in the pissing rain while we got it sorted, and do the track walk to try and find them was very much appreciated.
All in all, it was a damn good idea, and one that should be repeated, but maybe not in monsoon season next time!

Being able to sleep would have made a difference mate. The rain Saturday was fairly persistant, if we'd had a better nights sleep the night before, we'd have been in better spirits and achieved so much more.
The campsite owners neglected to tell us it was a 16 plus campite.....
Weather aside, the scenery was still amazing, shame we never got opportunity to go for a hack and take it in.
The Karts were very hit and miss. If you had a good car, it was great, but car selection was a lottery. My first car had no brakes and wouldn't turn right, my second car handled on a knife edge.
The monumetal bad luck was entierly unpredictable, someone wanted this to fail and was not subtle about how they achieved it!
I'd like to organise somthing similar for next year, should the Yeovil Show not happen. Maybe in Bude, Watercombe Bay, Perranporth.. Same scenery, away from the ignorant masses that flock to the lights like moths to flame. Therefore with the same potential.
Thanks to all who made the effort, great to meet you all and I consider you all fiends as well as zoners. I apologise for the campsite. while cosmetic improvements have been made, I'm deeply dissapointed by the disaffected attitude of the proprietors.

Yeah I was a tad jealous of the drysuit effect... as opposed to the wetsuit effect that their 'waterproofs' had.cotty the kart gimp wrote: At least I was dry
I drove through newquay on my way home, to pick up some branded sweets and a toy or two for the kids. I've not been there for a long time and I was horrified, it was always a bit of a cheesy commercialised town but now its wall to wall groups of meatheads/slappers on 'themed nights'... Its like the southwests version of benidorm. Shocking.... and such a shame that a nice place has been ruined by hen night hell.'bring in the gimp wrote:Reminded me of Blackpool with the amount of hen and stag parties.

Hats off to you, your pretty handy in a kart, would be interesting to see how well you went on something like Buckmore Park. Actually have you ever raced at Clay Pigeon?, just off the A37 near Yeovil.munky30 wrote:I blame the kart... the right wheel wouldnt turn! But yes, you had me... either way... I've only ever raced on an indoor circuit in Norwich. Used to go to school with the owners son so we used it loads when it was closed.
That was 12 years ago
I just settled into the same mindset I had when I owned a mini... ie, throw it into the corner and hope for the best!
As soon as I realised the guy in front was you I just had to have a go. Think it was that hairpin before the bridge where I took it.
Rule 1: dont go over the kerbs. Well sod that... the kerbs had some grip!

Bloody rain.
guess what everyone, the suns out right now
anyway thanks to nathan for organising the event, had a very amusing night on fri and wil post some pics on the other thread, sorry the rain ruinned the karting but at least you all have some (very lasting) memories of the weekend.
your right munky, newquay has gone to the dogs, there are better places to drink in cornwall
hopefully there will be another chance for you all to get down here as the roads are fantastic, (perhaps let someone else lead the convoy though).

tbh I don't think the rain ruined it, not putting rain tyres on and karts that didnt work properly did.
Oh and the f*cking waterproofs! If they'd spent a few more pennies on suits like cotty's instead of seconds from matalans 'waterproofs that don't work sale' then it would have made a huge difference!

Oh I matched Cotty with a 1 min 10 secs lap!! Woo Hoo!!!
My other laps sucked, I span loads. My second kart drifted sweet on the corner after going over the Bridge. Think Ziggy got pictures of me getting it completely wrong!! Ironically, he was never there when I did get it right

I managed a 1.12 in the 2nd session iirc, but it was as I was handed my time slip that I realised my keys were gone so I have no idea what happened to it.
I found the corner before going over the bridge, and the one onto the home straight just after going under it were the best for drifts. Full speed into both of them, steer into it a bit too too much and the back would step out all on its own.
Then it was just a case of holding the power on and correcting as needed. I held a slide on the last corner right up to the big hairpin at the start, a good 20 metres or so and the flick back from it lined me up perfectly for the first corner.

I nearly spacked into the tyres on the first corner... No wait, I did spack into the tyres on the first corner. NOt drifting but sliding ok for a bit then spacking it and spinning into the tyres.

I gave up on racing almost instantly and just decided to spend the time getting the back out. Apart from those couple of laps where I beat cotty I didnt have a clue who I was passing/being passed by so it seemed a bit pointless to try and race.
Know what you mean about making the most of it. The fist session was the best for me (apart from those two laps where I beat cotty, not sure if I've I mentioned that before?) as my kart worked fine all the way. Second one was a bit of a blow out, one engine for two laps, a couple of laps where I was beating cotty, then my right front wheel decided it didnt like turning so I couldnt even get a few good drifts in.
Was still a laugh though while I was on track, but could and should have been so much better. I want to go back there in the dry and see what those karts are really capable of as its a good track.

Im more an endurance team driver, steady laps times lap after lap after lap usually 30 or 40 mins stints, all about keeping it on the black stuff but still pushing enough
