guys just a quick question,if a headunit doesnt have any preouts for an additional amplifier isit possible to connect the speaker wires from the headunit and possibly fit RCA cables on to them which go straight to an amplifier????

Um, not unless you want to kill your amp, the voltage is much to high.

Shaz, there is this cable which you should be able to get from halford or any car audio shop, it converts your speaker wires to rca which then can be connected to an amp, i found a link below but there are others.

But if you do decide to get one make sure you get a decent brand one, cos once we tried to use a cheapish one but the sound didnt come out that good...

As above

It can be done

Might be better to sell on the existing head unit and get another (new or 2nd user) head unit with 1 or more pre outs built in.

Would be better in the long run IMO

AND

Would give more options for system expansion in the future

Agree with the above...while it can be done, the signal isnt' going to be great...

I'd say get something like this...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1

Ignore the coloured display, and flasyness...my old head-unit was built on the same platform as this...so...
it has 3, 4v pre-outs...this makes a huge difference when you're amplifying something...gives a much cleaner signal...

should also have built in high-low pass filters, along a list of other features!

People often neglect that the whole system is getting it's source from the head-unit...so this is where the money should be spent! :D

it can be done! i do it all the time to factory head units, when customers want a sub fitted to the stock radio....

http://www.legacycaraudio.com/itempage.asp?model=LN60

i use these they work with no probs and they have gain control on them too and built in ground loop. they go for around 15-20 quid
